As a dread possibility, Erlin may not be a tribal god of ancient Gundarakite false history, but rather a corrupted facsimile of a death god from Duke Gundar's home on the Prime Material Plane. When he arrived in the Land of Mists, he found that Erlin's priests had no divine power, and Erlin's worship gradually dwindled away.[1]

However, in 754 BC, Emanuel Maryszkas called upon Erlin to be saved from Barovian pursuers. His prayer was answered, and he has become the cult leader of the newly revitalized Cult of Erlin, complete with genuine clerical spellcasting abilities.[1]
