Adam Desjardins is the patriarch of the Dejardins family residing at the plantation Huit Cyprès in Souragne. The fortunes of the family have been in decline for three generations and were additionally menaced in the present by the absence of a male heir and by a wife who is no longer able to conceive. To set things aright, Adam forced himself upon his eldest daughter, committing the crime of, and breaking the taboo against, incest. The rape fell out in such a way that the belief now hangs over the household that a demon has been loosed upon it.
