Marta von Marsten is the wife of John von Marsten and the mother of Wilhelm von Marsten. Although John holds true feelings of love and affection in his heart for her, he is much too concerned for her protection, becoming highly restrictive of her activities. He shows notions of sexism, believing her behavior at nights unsuitable to a maiden. Therefore, he gives to her herbal sedatives in the evenings.[1]
