The moist, swampy soil yields to Alain's iron spade like runny cheese under a sharp knife. Muddy water seeps out of the ground, filling the bottom of the grave before Alain has finished placing Peregrinus in a burial pose with arms folded and eyes closed. After clambering out of the mucky hole, Alain tosses down black earth till he has completely buried the mortal remains of the murdered wizard.

Inside the house, he finds a curiously carved ebony stick almost as long as his forearm, some scrolls covered in what may be magical writing, and a heavy tome marked with mystic warding sigils. He takes these items and packs the securely in his bags, along with the jeweled skull.

Leaving the corpse of the mad elf-maid, Rardi Silverhelm, to be devoured by the scavengers of the bogs, Alain rides off towards the setting sun.

THE END OF THIS CHAPTER.
Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

-from Moby Dick (Hermann Melville)
