And yes sneak in and try to open the gate. Just need to make sure the guards are down first because even at the night they can see that the gate has been opened."
Devlin's brow furrows. He looks at Lady Safina.

"I don't know much about magic, but is there a way that would make them think that that gate had not opened? a charm or illusion perhaps?"

Torthur comes back in, "I tell ye what. Me king weren't born to his station, he earned it through his deeds. I am honored an pleased ter call im me king. You," he points his finger at him "you were born ta yer station an go aroun doin as ye please cuz yer the Duke. WHen ye've earned me respect by yer actions an deeds, then you'll hear me call ye yer grace. Fer now, I be polite an call ye sir."
Devlin stands, clearly offended.

"I take back my words, I am in need of no one who is a disrespectful as you, dwarf. Guards! escort the dwarf out to the street and to the Gorgon's crown tavern. Let the tavern keeper know he has earned the disfavor of the Duke. He is not to return to this building."

The Duke waits until the dwarf is escorted out and looks angrily at Sir Roald, more mad at Torthur than his kinsman.

"I am unfamiliar with the mannerisms of dwarves, but in the presence of a Duke of Anuire, I demand the respect due me. This is Tuornen, where any man or even dwarf can raise himself through deeds and claim nobility, thats what it means to be a Tuor! I know you don't speak for the dwarf, nor he you, Sir Roald Flaertes. But he has made it clear that he is in your company and therefore I make him YOUR responsibility.

As for this raid. Gunner has a good point, I did not know the extent of Lady Safina's abilities- an incantation that renders you invisible is scores preferable to me than a trip through that shadowy realm. And of course The Siegebreaker has a good point too: the women could be moved or long dead. That Dwarf may even have blown them up alighting that smoke powder. We do require more information before we attempt such a rescue. Lady Safina, you say your abilities are only good for so long in the day, I understand. what about several days?

"What I suggest is this, its a suggestion and not an order, as we have council for this precise reason, I suggest that Sir Roald, Lady Safina, Gunner, and Lord Filbert first go to the City of Endier. Find out what you can about the missing girls and find out more about how they are being funneled to Alamie.

Sir Roald I trust in your abilities and wisdom to lead this mission. You may have become the Warden of the Tuor River, but before that you were a sellsword. You know how to deal and talk with the people you will need to talk to in order to find out what must be known. It is your decision as to what will be done with Torthur. I admire his resolve to stop Region, but I cannot allow him to be a loose cannon that could derail our efforts. I can keep him safely under guard at the Gorgon's Crown tavern, or you could take him with you. Either way, find out who is behind these initial kidnappings.

Stop the source.

Lord Filbert, as my ambassador I would have you meet with Guilder Kalien and propose to him our rescue of his people-all the while with an ear and eye to the ground to see if the Guilder's spies report it back to anyone.

Master Gunner, in your absence I will assign Lady Beatrix with guards to keep her safe, so that this mission does not derelict your duties. I am sure her brother, Captain Rennault here, will vet the men personally to his satisfaction. They will need someone of your strength and stature. Your very presence may inspire tongues to loosen.

Lady Safina, within Endier resides the wizard Caine. My father permitted him the rights to the magic of Tuornen's land, provided he give us aid when we need it. We saw no help from him during the invasion and if he'd continue to use our sources, a new arrangement must be made. Inform him that I am open to keeping his sources where they are without encroaching upon them through developing the wild-permitted he begin scrying on Alam at once and informing us of their plans and movements.

And speaking of these magical land sources...Lady Safina, do you have the power or knowledge to tap into them? I wonder if any unclaimed wonders reside within Alamie?"

The Duke of Tuornen looks around at the assembled war council, and smiles. He feels surrounded by capable men and women.

"Any suggestions, advice or additional notes?" the Duke asks.
Torthur waits for the guards. Once they're surrounding him, he looks at the Duke with contempt.

"Its a wonder ye do anything yerself. Maybe ye gots someone ter tie yer shoes. Why don't you teach me some manners yourself, or are you too much a coward to accept me challenge to a duel? First one down and out."

Roald rises from the table, walks through the guards to stand above Torthur. "The bears who raised you clearly neglected in teaching you etiquette." He jabs a finger at the dwarf. "If you challenge His Grace, then you challenge me!"

Torthurs eyes narrow. "Me beef aint with you. An seein as hes too cowardly ter fight his own battles, I aint fightin ye as me beef aint with ye. Now, them guards is gonna escort me outta here.
I'm done. An I knows ye is a man, so if I turn me back on ye, ye ainnt gonna do nuthin."

He does just that, and whether the guards escort him or not, he leaves quietly.

Roald draws his sword and lays it on dwarf's shoulder when he turns around. "That's where you're wrong, Torthur. I have no issue stabbing a man in the back. Or a dwarf for that matter. Not if he's my enemy. And if you continue to disrespect the Duke, that what you become."

Torthur shrugs off the blade and walks away, not saying a word.

"Perhaps Your Grace. I can hide the gate from vision but the sound would be more difficult. And i am certainly happy to examine these sources and see if they are a power i could use. I, too, can scry so perhaps I should examine our destination before we depart? I can do that tomorrow, then prepare for an expedition the day after..."

Devlin-

"That sounds good. Would it be more useful to use the invisibility for escape? The prisoners may have a troublesome time in the shadow world if that has to be used to escape. Maybe while your in Endier you can find another wizard who has this power. Perhaps Caine might assist?"

TORTHUR-

The four guards with halberds box Torthur in.

Once outside the room one of them tells the dwarf-

"Get moving."

The men walk at their own brisk pace. One of them occasionally prods the slow-footed dwarf with the butt of his pole-arm when Torthur has trouble keeping up.

Foerde, Auld Oak Kitchen

Foerde will eat his breakfast and discuss what ever work Brennan needs done around the inn.

Rennault struggles to keep look of sardonic amusement from his face as the miniature drama between the dwarf and Dike Devlin unfolds. When the dwarf walks out, Renn clears his throat.

"Your Grace, I'd be happy to veT my lady sister's guards whIle Gunnar is away on the raid. And I would request to accompany Sir Roald on this venture. This is a job made for skulking--my skills a breaking locks and stealth would serve you well in this."

Devlin-

"Agreed Captain. If this is workable of course for you Sir Roald? Well it seems we have the workings of a plan. Go to endier, stop the source, then gain entry into Lofton, capture the fiend responsible, and rescue those poor women."

Devlin stands, preparing to leave.

"And, if any more of that smoke powder remains, re appropriate or destroy it. Lady Safina, you say you have the ability to scry? could you employ that gift now to see where the Alam armies might be positioned?"

Roald sheaths his blade and nods towards Renn. "Your Grace, I'd be happy to have Captain Ghonallison accompany me to Endier."

Devlin-

"Then begin at once. I leave the floor to you Sir Roald. You must not fail. The women depend upon your success. Lady Safina, I await your scrying report."

Devlin makes to leave, stopping only if anyone has anything else to add.

CORMAC, MORNING OF THE SECOND (THREE DAYS BEHIND THE MAIN PARTY IN HAES)

After resting for the night, Cormac leads his small band deeper into the mountains, following the directions the goblin leader had given him.

...

The black hollow of the cave mouth pierces the massive rocky spire rising from the cover of lichen-crusted, dead pines, like a window set near the top of a high tower.

Dietric looks up the sixty-odd foot spike of stone and whistles.

''That's taller than I had guessed, but it fits what the goblins told us."

Ned the Poacher curses softly and pulls his ragged cloak closer to his body. In this high-up country, even with the sun shining and summer but a month away, mornings remain cold.
Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.
