Andre saw one of the Dire Bats fall to the lance of sound that impacted it. Unfortunately, the other one was deciding that yes, Lia was in fact some sort of tasty snack cake. Even with her eldritch fire impacting it, it still didn't want to do the sensible thing, namely remebering that yes, it WAS dead, and as such, should stop moving.

Andre, the caring individual that he was, decided to help jog its memory.

"Kyrie, ignis divine, eleison" Said with an unseen gesture, a pillar of Holy Fire roaring down from the heavens to impact the bat.

Flame strike at the upper right corner of B2, 29 damage, DC 19 reflex save for half, then moving to H5

OOC: Ack! Squished between an unforgiving mass transit system (track fires = interesting times) on one hand and a presidential debate on the other! Shooting our remaining knight; a 31 to attack for 16 damage.

The Eye of the Jackal's Ruse, Sebua
July 16th, 761, 4:07 AM; Day 121 of the Menetnashte Expedition

PC Actions
Charles disables the second layer of wards.
Khalil cuts Vamp 6 for 24 damage, Vamp 5 for 9 damage.
Lia fireballs Vampire 7 for 6 damage, sets the ship on fire.
Kuzan casts Divine Vengeance at Vamp 2, deals 39 damage.
Tomas is Dazed, but not Cursed. An improvement, one could say.
Andre casts Flamestrike on Vamp 7 for 14 damage.
Otto shoots the Vampire 2. It is dead.

[quote="Lia takes a single step back and points her hand, once again, at the bat. "If I am going, you are going with me, at least," she says, her voice choked with blood. "Sphaera ignis expandens e manu evolat." [/quote]

The giant vampire bat, it seemed, was not impressed. The weak fireball barely scorched it's already charred fur, and Lia saw in its eyes that this creature was not even remotely under Cavendish's control. No, the wild, savage vampire was out for one thing now. And unfortunately for Lia, she happened to be the largest reservoir in the area.

It lunged forward, burying sleek, ivory fangs in Lia's neck. The piercing cold seemed to flow through Lia's body, numbing the wizardess. She couldn't feel her extremities any more. Her eyes wavered and unfocused, even as the image of the black bat upon the night sky turned into meaningless gibberish of darkness and shadows.

So this was what death felt like.

===============================================
Tomas wrote:"Not so fast, John Lancaster Cavendish!" Tomas exclaims, because that is just what the hero does in this situation, even if it does cause blood to pour down his chin causing a disgusting chill to rake up Tomas's spine.
"Herr Eisenwald!" Cavendish's face split into a huge, toothy grin, interlocking teeth like sawblades in his grey, inhuman face. The Necromancer cast a look behind him, towards Lia. "Why Miss Mournswaith, you brought me a present too! And he's even gift-wrapped. Oh, many pardons, I can see your busy."

The Necromancer turned back to Tomas, twirling the broken length of wood like a baton. Since you'd last seen it, the cherrywood had darkened, and the patches of Allikhain's dried blood were like dark molds or fungi on the rotted and pitted wood. Cavendish had installed a handle of bone at the end, at some point, but even in its decrepit condition, the spell-strengthed cane was a lethal weapon.

"You'll forgive me a certain quiver of anticipation?" Cavendish smirked. "I do so enjoy my work. The sign of a master craftsman, I always say, the ability to take pleasure in one's work. And now... Gorichiya dusha kak gorichiy cheyuk, pith nado bystro!"

Cavendish made an 'O' of his mouth, and Tomas felt in his muggy condition the warmth of his body escaping. His limbs felt a little weaker, his heart beat a little slower, and suddenly a tendril of pure-white mist emerged from behind the paladin's clenched teeth. The slithering serpent of mist crossed the distance between the exemplars of good and evil, and as Cavendish breathed in the end of it, Tomas felt his arms and legs become leaden and slow, and the shield seemed unimaginably heavy. The paladin's heart began to beat irregularly, and the weight of the sword grew too much to bear. All the while Cavendish battened down on Tomas's life energy like a sleek, sinister spider, a loathsome parasite in suspenders and smoked lenses.

Then something happened to distract the Necromancer.

[Spellcraft DC 20]

===============================================
Nathan of the Fos wrote:It goes better than the first one--not much, perhaps all the fiddling didn't even help, but at least the sigil's energies pour into the ground and not into Charles, or into some kind of arcane eruption.

Two down, one to go. Keep him away from me, Tomas!
The second layer of sigils and arcane runes flickered and faded, the energy draining harmlessly into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, it was probably the only thing that was harmless in this entire battle. For the distortion in the pit was growing restless.

Suddenly, as though the Taint was some kind of sentient thing, seeking freedom, (and who's to say it wasn't, really?) the distortion shot into the air, a huge tentacle of fractured reality, high into the air above the pit. The heat-shimmer-like effect was intense, and as you looked into it, you saw... images. Slate-grey peaks clawing at the sky, shrouded in poisonous clouds of orange vapor. Palaces in sickly green marble, pockmarked as though by disease. A golden city, but subtly tarnished, a gold of greed. And everywhere, shadows.

Memories? Portals? Or simply the thrashings of reality gone wrong?

You wouldn't find out anytime soon, for now Cavendish's fail-safes kicked into gear. Even as weakened as they were, the arrays of magical symbology was not to be scorned. Reservoirs of runic power were drained as the names of seven dark constellations focused and sharpened them into a geodesic pyramid of vivid green light. The final circle flared, unimaginably bright and fueled by an elemental's True Name, a green sun of venom, even as the Nightmares fought against the necromancer's chains.

[Knowledge: Arcana or Spellcraft to figure out just what is going on. Or some of it, at any rate.]

===============================================

Cavendish gestured once, briefly, and bit down on the cold, otherworldly mist. The tendril shot like an elastic back into Tomas's soul, and the Lamordian felt a little strength return to his bones, but still so very cold... so very weak.

"Nevedemiki Obyevitec." Cavendish barked out the quick spell, turning his face lightly from place to place. Only he and Tomas were anywhere near the Pit of Nightmares. He certainly wasn't sabotaging his own work, and Tomas had other things on his mind. A continued heartbeat, for instance. But if that's the case...

Charles felt the comforting cloak of his invisibility rudely revoked, torn asunder by otherworldy feelers of Cavendish's spell. The Dementlieuse mathematician was quite alone. Cavendish smiled briefly. "Schrodinger, take care of it."

===============================================

The only member of this huge melee who had yet to participate, the smiler beside Cavendish's hammock rose up to its feet lazily. It was... not like the other of the Necromancer's pets. It was a bit longer, a bit leaner and sleeker, more a sinuous panther than the attack-dog-like builds of the other Smilodons. A different species, perhaps. It turned its skeletal, sightless eyes towards Charles, triangulating the lonely, unguarded mathematician.

The great feline arched its back and yowled, a hideous screech made by the grating of bone on bone, and with a final convulsion, leapt forward... and vaporized. Or so it seemed to the others, for at a certain point in mid-leap, the Smiler lost all cohesion, bones flying apart, and then even the bones falling to constituent components, chips of stone and then fine grit, a cloud of suspended sand.

Which rushed forward towards Charles. A cloud of billowing sand, moving as swiftly as a sandstorm and turning at ever greater rates, and at its forefront Charles glimpsed the dark, gleaming-eyed feline face.

Out for his blood.

After the vampire in front of him dissipated, something in the distance caught his attention.

The circle.

Whatever Charles had been doing, it must've worked. Maybe, just maybe this could be stopped here and now.

"Otto, give me a second while you load the cannon." The priest's golden eyes fixed on the pit. He held his holy symbol in his hand and whispered words of unbinding. Whatever god answered that prayer invisibly reached out, crossing the distance between Kuzan and the circle. Its myriad mouths opened hungrily, revealing fanged teeth that only Kuzan could see, and they began devouring the magic circle as the priest watched.

Dispel magic, 14 (dice) + 10 (level) + 24 on the check, which I believe is game, set, and match for that circle.

Also 30 Knowledge (religion) on Schrodinger.

Schrodinger?

As the cat (which is neither alive nor dead, and which, furthermore, has a location which cannot be defined, and a momentum which definitely can be) rolls toward him, Charles makes a snap decision. The better part of valor is to leave immediately.

"TOMAS! RETREAT!" he screams, and, gesticulating wildly in the hope that someone, anyone with arcane abilities might possibly be paying attention, he continues, "FINISH IT OFF!"

Finally, in a more normal tone, "Ablepsosin!"

And, suiting deed to words, he retreats. Well, he doesn't exactly retreat, but he does go elsewhere--towards Khalil and the imprisoned monks, as quick as the wings of flight can take him.

Dispensing some advice, casting invisibility again, and moving to O36.

Andre saw Lia fall. No, scratch that, He saw her die. Of course, he then felt the mystical energy leaving him, almost like a reflex. Divine power grabbed hold of those fleeting threads of sweet life's bounty, and held on.

Whatever lay beyond the world of mortals, Lia would have to wait to experience it.

The vampire however, the vampire Andre felt rather like giving a one way ticket to the lands beyond death. A muttered prayer to his vengeful goddess, and imperceptibly, his hand began to crackle with energy. Vibrant and renewing to the living, and a painful anathema to the dead that yet walk.

And currently...giving Mr.Bat a friendly pat on the shoulder/wing/appendage.

Close Wounds on Lia for 7 HP healed putting her at -4 and Stable., 18 damage from a Cure Serious Wounds to Mr Vamp, 23 to hit with a touch attack. DC 18 Will for Half., moved to C6

It seemed that everything was goign to hell, and for a moment Khalil pauses indescisvely, unsure quite what to do. However the unearthly screech form behind him makes up his mind. If we can dispatch that cat and the vampire, the monks go free. he thinks, trying desperatkly to find some kind of positive outcome to the total carnage occuring around him, and Ishaq and Jervis might see another sunrise...

Grimacing at the pain in his shoulder he draws his arms in and shoots forward, levelling out close ot he ground, spinning like a corkscrew, he scythes into the vampire form behind at knee level. Rolling sideways he follows with a second blow into the cretaures exposed back, before deftly feinting and moving in the opposite direction, and bring a final backhand slash to its face.

Panting he finshes in a low defensive crouch, blades crossed, hoping against hope that he has given Jervis the opportunity he needed to consign another denizen of hell back to whence it came.

OOC: Bleh...sorry for the non-posts twice in a row, but it's hard to work up the proper creativity while fasting (wheeee Yom Kippur) and I'm doing something rather monotonous anyway. Preparing the cannon for another firing; with any luck, y'all will have artillery cover next term. :)

"So nice to be seeink you again..." Tomas stumbles backwards, paling as the vital life force is sucked out of his very spirit. "...how're things? The wife, kids doing sie gut, nein?I'd stay for a longer visit, but I am being supposed to keep your ugly ass busy until..." And out of the reflection of his sword, he sees that Charles isn't there anymore.

"Well, until that." Tomas wipes his brow, feeling a surge of vitality push his screaming, aching muscles forward, as he trudges to the south...

"Johnny, Old Boy, know when to cut your losses. And next time, don't pause to torture the Lamordian." Cavendish pinched the bridge of his nose in mild annoyance, though you had the feeling he was more irritated with himself than anything else. "Do that after the battle."

Cavendish surveyed the field of battle, tilting his head only slightly to either side, though what went on behind those opaque smoked lenses you could only guess at. On the whole, things could be going better. Ishaq had just rammed his sword through the Smiler's skull, causing it to shatter into a cloud of stone dust. Jervis did some trick with the blade, slamming the remaining vampire into the ground with a dull thud before decapitating it. The Devourer's magics had finally taken control of another Smiler, which was busy clawing a vampire who had fallen to his feet and begun to feast on the blood left from the destroyed Bloodhulk. The third vampire was currently clawing the empty air like a rabid weasel.

Before Cavendish could comment more on this, a new Smiler appeared atop the nearby ship. It was... a rather ragged-looking specimen, on the whole, covered in soot and hopping along on three limbs, the bones of its left forepaw badly fractured. Cavendish's brows narrowed.

"Chesterton?.... where's....they dropped a what on you?" Cavendish sighed again. "Good help is so hard to resurrect these days. Well, get over here. Schrodinger, Grosvenor, to me!"

The Necromancer himself whirled, moving away from the fast-deteriorating situation and towards the group of undead statues. Cavendish reached the nearest, turning once more to his audience. "Well, it's been a lovely party, but I really must run. But don't worry, I'll do what I can to keep it from getting dull! Kamen, slushai moyu volyu!"

Cavendish tapped the stone with the end of his broken quarterstaff, and the rock began to move. It attenuated and fractured, and then, as though so many deformed chicks hatching from eggs, the undead were released. Two mummified corpses, sickly and hideous, forced themselves from their stone cacoons. A billowing nothingness flowed out of the fractures, disappearing from sight as the shards of stone fell from its form. A skeletal undead shimmied out of its prison, lashing forth at Cavendish with a long, hideous tongue of pink-red flesh.

Only to recoil as Schrodinger flew in front of it, sharp, stinging sand that transformed into a fierce and vicious feline of stone teeth and stone bones. On the other side of Cavendish, the other Smiler from the Devourer fight, Grosvenor, appeared, while the wounded Chesterton screeched above.

"Ah, ah, ah! Come now, much more appetizing targets over there." The undead looked at the group of captured monks and people. As a one, they shambled forward, the mummies in front and followed by the skeletal killer. Off to the side, the faceless, featureless undead walked forward, lacking the vicious claws or rending blows of the others, but nevertheless calm and confident.

Only the drowned corpse chose the opposite direction. It had had enough of this, and it did not want to get involved. The Blackwing took to the air as well.

Some new trouble-makers! Everything within 30 feet of the Bodak must make a DC 15 Fort Save or drop to -9 HP (and not stabilized), as per our house rules. This is the purple area. This is a Gaze attack, so check the SRD.

===============================================

Jervis pulled the sword from the vampire's ashes, looking up at the oncoming onslaught. The mercenary didn't look particularly worried. Actually, Jervis didn't look particularly anything, although there was a strange look in his eyes. He wasn't a berserker... quite.

"Problem." The man said laconically, indicating the undead.

Get to the monastery. A voice sounded in your heads. It had a somewhat quiet, rather dry feel to it, like the slithering of serpents or the rustling of old books. Not a pleasant voice, but an assured one. Which was rather more comforting in this situation. We shall provide covering fire

And from the shuttered windows of the Monastery of Still Nightmares, a barrge of gunfire poured into the lead mummy, rocking it back on it's heels.

Alright, the first Primary Objective is completed, and Cavendish is preparing to escape. All you need to do now is get yourselves and the monks to the red area. Once all PCs/NPCs are at that area, we end the fight and end the Book. If you desire, you can also head into the monastery proper, at which point you're completely safe, but can no longer influence events (I advise this for the monks and for any badly wounded people such as Lia or Tomas).

Letting out the monks requires either a DC 20 Open Lock check, or sundering the gate, which has the standard statistics for a wooden door in the SRD.

Kaitou Kage wrote:The priest's golden eyes fixed on the pit.
The pyramid of venomous energy shattered as though struck by a sledge-hammer. Kuzan's magic unwound the final, connections, forcing it to bear arcane stress as it had never been intended to do. Something malfunctioned, and the spell collapsed in on itself, sending sharp, arcane pressure crashing down into the Pit of Nightmares. The distortion increased, opening up briefly into a vista of a glorious palace-city, something of a forgotten, hyperborean age.

A single building, but of a size and scope that was unimaginable, the size of Chateaufaux easily. Cyclopean walls ringed the city-palace, sheathed in white marble with black-green veins. Iron-bound gates opened into arenas with blood-stained sand and libraries of tomes in black leather. Squares bustled with activity, by humans, yes, but also by things the eye didn't quite see, the mind didn't quite comprehend. And at this palace-city's heart was a temple, open to the sky, crafted of the finest black marble, a spot of inky-darkness in the brilliant city. Priests in black robes and black masks strode through this temple, and other beings. But above all this was the statue.

A colossus, it towered over the city, a construct of black marble that stood taller than Ezra's cathedral in Levkarest. It was... not an unfamiliar figure. The androgynous figure wore a simple robe and the head-dress of a snarling, vicious jackal. In outstretched hands, it clutched a book and a knife, but most disturbingly, this figure... it had no face.

Then distortion collapsed in on itself, incapable of supporting its own psychic weight. The Nightmares shuddered and contracted and coalesced at the bottom of the Pit of Nightmares. And it was gone.

"So simple... you just need more energy." Cavendish's voice cut through the silence. He sounded... thoughtful. "To spark the chain reaction, you need more energy. But how to concentrate it enough..."

"Feast your eyes, Ladies and Gentlemen..." The Necromancer murmurred, not theatrically, not flamboyantly, but in a harsh, certain whisper that carried through the field. "For when you see it next, it will be atop the ashes of Port-a-Lucine."

Hurtling through the air, Charles realizes he has a decision to make. Something strange is happening off to his left; he doesn't really have time to make it out, for better or worse. Someone inside the monastery--that would be the Abbot, presumably--is giving the "Rally 'round the standard" call. The guards are down; well done, lads--and that means they just have to get the monks out and everyone to the monastery, and then...well, whatever happens next. But first! Pick the lock, or break down the door?

Charles reviews the steps--alight, get the lockpicks out, find the lock, fiddle, fiddle a little more, try a different lockpick...

And on the other hand, really, it doesn't look like a very sturdy door.

Decision made, he plunges for it, striking it feet-first and carrying it off its hinges, then collapsing atop it as he winks back into sight and finds himself looking upward at a collection of dark, robed figures, who convey an attitude of astonishment even without his being able to see their faces.

Then the door shifts. After a panicked moment, Charles realizes what has happened. "Right, sorry!" he says, rolling off and lifting the door to reveal the (presumably also astonished) monk beneath it. "Everybody out! Single file, now, no pushing."

Move to the door and Str check 17 to break it down succeeds.

"Wait!" Khalil shouts as the monks begin to stream out of the broken gate and head for sanctury.

"Whatever those are" he punctuates his speech with a scimitar thrust in the direction of the faceless dead and its compatriots "they are not friendly, and they will cut off our escape before we can get there. Anyone with a gun care to do some damage, or distract them in some other permananent way?"

Moving across towards the pit he attempts to provide the undead with some kind of target and draw their attention away form the fleeing monks, sending a couple of knives spinning their way as an incentive.

[OOC: Didnt fancy the molotov thing so gogin with Rocks idea.
Dervishing to P29 chucking 2 knives at the lead salt mummy and the bodak thing more to gain their attention than to do any damage.

to hit: 29 / 14
damage: 8 / 7]
"I had a dream, which was not all a dream.
The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars
Did wander darkling in the eternal space..."

Otto shielded his eyes from the glare, vaguely conscious through his fingers that *something* was going on in the field, and that it involved pyrotechnics...and then opened his eyes, and adjusted his spectacles.

Distance vision was still a bit fiddly as far as the gunsmith had been concerned--there's only so much a pair of hand-ground lenses can do, and the transmuted-glass ones they'd started to manufacture in the App. Arc. labs had been outside his price range. Nonetheless, it was pretty obvious that the field had changed somewhat in the past several seconds.

Grey baddie, elongated skull. Remember your research: those are bad news. Get on it, first priority.

Roger.

"Gazing-dead, eleven-o-clock. A long shot, but he is within our range--use conventional shot--" (A flurry of activity) "--Now: FIRE!"

--KRA-BOOM--

Curses!

Ultimately, it was the extra distance that mucked it up. The cannonball whizzed mere centimeters over the bodak's head and--

--KRAK-CRASH--

--The necromancer's garish hammock exploded in a shower of woodchips and clashing fabric swatches. The gunsmith's frustration was mitigated somewhat.

Can't wipe out a walking corpse to save your life, but at least you can score a victory for sensible interior decorating...

...Then again, no sense in being tasteful if you're dead. Which means your revised goal is to use that shot as a distrac--

"OI! SLOW AND UGLY!" The gunsmith bellowed at the top of his lungs from the upper deck of the ship, doing his best to attract the bodak's attention. "HOW IS IT FEELING TO HAVE TEN SECONDS BEFORE YOU ARE SHREDDED INTO TINY STRIPS?"

OOC: #$^&%...I have a three-quarters chance of hitting any target I aim at, so of course I roll a natural 1 on my aiming check. Trying to get the local undead to run towards the (explosive) ship...

Tomas breathes, the supernatural exhaustion keeping him from even thinking straight. His everything hurts, and his vision is blurring. Oh no, they're heading towards the...

...Tomas closes his eyes, and leaps into the air, 'flying' forward, arms wheeling and legs kicking as though he were trying to ride an invisible bicycle...only to land with a "fumph!" on the ground, over fifty feet away! "I'm...coming..." Tomas manages, desperately trying to figure out a way to get to the monks in time...!

(OOC: Double move, going to W32. I think I did the math right-half of 12 is six, six and six is 12 again, and you can double fly as long as it is in a straight line. If I am wrong, and can only go six squares this round, I'd like to move to Q26, fiend aggro be darned.)
