The Chiller TV Network

Post by Catman Jim »

I was surprised this week when my cable TV provider gave us a new channel unannounced, The Chiller Network. Does anyone else have this?

I'm liking what I see so far, I tend to prefer this type of older horror/thriller programming. I had never even heard of this channel before. Here's what the Wiki on it says;

The channel's origin
On January 12, 2007, NBC Universal announced its intent to launch a new channel on March 1, 2007 dedicated to the horror genre, which would feature both films and shows.

NBC Universal also stated that, aside from content in their own vaults, Chiller features content from other studios as well, including Lionsgate, Sony, Warner Bros., and 20th Century Fox.

On February 23, 2007 and February 24, 2007, The 101, channel 101 on DIRECTV, aired a preview of Chiller. Programming featured during this preview included the two-hour pilot episode of Twin Peaks; the pilot episode of American Gothic; episodes of Monsters, Tales from the Crypt, Night Gallery, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Friday the 13th: The Series; and various horror movies.

On February 25, 2007, NBC Universal's cable channel dedicated to the crime and mystery genres, Sleuth, aired a fourteen-hour movie marathon entitled "Chiller On Sleuth" to promote the launch of Chiller. The movies that aired during this marathon were Wait Until Dark, Psycho (1998), I Saw What You Did (the 1988 version), and The Island.

The channel officially launched at 6:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on March 1, as scheduled. A brief introduction video to the channel, with creepy CGI horror imagery, aired first. The New Alfred Hitchcock Presents was the first show broadcast on Chiller.

The network's original line-up included the following TV series: Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The New Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Night Gallery, Friday the 13th: The Series, Tales from the Crypt, Twin Peaks, Good vs Evil, Monsters, American Gothic, and Freddy's Nightmares. As of June 6, 2007, Chiller is airing the 1987 FOX series Werewolf. This is the first time the series has aired on television in twenty years. Chiller premiered the series with a marathon on June 6, 2007. The series aired Wednesdays at 8PM and 8:30PM, replacing the airing of two episodes of Monsters. This was confirmed by a moderator on the message boards on Chiller's website. Chiller began airing the series Brimstone on Saturday, July 28, 2007.

The network also featured the following films in its first month on the air (in the order that they were first shown): The Shining, Werewolf of London, The Watcher, Nightmares, Stephen King's Cat's Eye, and Dial M for Murder, Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy, Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man, The Legacy, The Andromeda Strain, The Body Snatchers, John Carpenter's Village of the Damned, It Came From Outer Space, The People Under the Stairs, Believe, Creepshow 2, Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Far From Home, Demon Seed, Monster on the Campus, The Bad Seed, The Funhouse, Tales from the Hood, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Psycho, The Invisible Woman, Body Snatchers, The Swarm, Last Stop, Ghost Story, Tarantula, Children of the Damned, The Phantom of the Opera, Cherry Falls, The Invisible Man's Revenge, Watchers, Blown Away, The Terminal Man, The Haunting, Cat People, Stage Fright, Terror in the Aisles, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Death Valley, Village of the Damned, Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Frankenstein, Tales From the Crypt: Bordello of Blood, Jaws, I Saw What You Did, and The Guardian.

For October, Chiller announced its "Dare 2 Direct Film Festival" which premiered on Halloween night. Viewers uploaded 300 short films and the winners will air on this original special.

The 2005 version of Night Stalker aired on Chiller on Saturday nights in November and December 2007.

Series that debuted on Chiller in early 2008 include The Others, Millennium, FreakyLinks, Tales from the Darkside, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Profit, Night Visions, Kindred: The Embraced, and Strange World

To celebrate and commemorate Chiller's first anniversary, the channel aired a viewers' choice marathon on March 1 2008. The most popular series episode was Millennium: "The Fourth Horseman." It was followed by Millennium: "Somehow, Satan Got Behind Me", Friday the 13th: The Series: "Scarecrow", Tales from the Crypt: "And All Through the House", Kolchak: The Night Stalker: "Horror in the Heights", Tales from the Darkside: "Halloween Candy", Kolchak: The Night Stalker: "The Vampire" and Millennium: "The Time Is Now." The series Strange World, FreakyLinks and The Others were previewed with their pilot episodes. The favorite movie in the viewers' choice was House on Haunted Hill.

Chiller also announced its 2008 Dare 2 Direct Film Festival, which will air on Halloween night in high-definition. The Chiller HD network debuts in October, as well.

In summer 2008, Chiller featured a Friday The 13th film marathon on Friday June 13 to launch its "Chiller Summer Camp" block.

I'm not able to catch it regulalry, but caught an ep of Tales from the Crypt (the British batch) and did a double take when Daniel Craig showed up in an ep about subliminal messaging.
