Monastery of Silver Threads

Discussing all things Ravenloft

How do you think Leo Dilysnia is after his being made a vampire never feeding and being entombed in the Monastery for 300 years?

Leo Dilisnya
(Full Strength)
Male Human Ari7/Rog 2/Wiz10
Medium Undead (Ancient Vampire)

Feats: Alertness, Armor Proficiency: heavy, Armor Proficiency: light,
Armor Proficiency: medium, Combat Reflexes, Dodge, Find Weakness,
Greater Spell Focus: Necromancy, Greater Spell Penetration, Hollow,
Improved Initiative, Lightning Reflexes, Machiavellian, Persuasive,
Scribe Scroll, Shield Proficiency, Simple Weapon Proficiency, Spell
Focus: Necromancy, Spell Penetration, Stealthy Blade, Wealth.

After Leo has been imprisoned inside of his coffin for nearly 400 years and was made into a vampire and has yet to feed on blood he is emaciated and under the effects of 18 negative levels.
Which is: -90 Hit points, -18 Negative levels, -18 on all skill checks, ability checks, attack rolls and saving throws.

His skills are fairly straightforward.

His feats were another matter. as suggested Find Weakness and Persuasive fits his character, while Machiavellian and wealth play to his background. Hollow seemed an easy way to give him a trump card with Strahd and a plausible reason as to why he finally lost to Strahd, because the fight was reduced to a battle of magic. While Leo had the help of 'some priests' to ward the monastery he still had to fight Strahd himself with really only magic.
and of course we know who wins that fight.

another enigma is the mention that Strahd reverses some magical effect that was keeping Leo's aging at bay. For a moment I thought it could just be a powers check failure, but how could Strahd dispel that>
So some strange spell to halt or slow down aging.

I am also going to assume that their are monks in the monastery. Now ghosts/or another undead that does not need to feed. Strahd punished them for helping Leo even indirectly and made them his guardians forever.

Also inside the monastery where the 'bad' magic items are, silvery threads like tinsel that hang down everywhere and obscure vision to 5 ft. So that PC's encounter items 1by1 instead of a free for all, and it seems a neat way to tie in the name. (thanks to my old dm for reminding me how he did that)

For now only other question I have is there any other history of this place that extends before 398BC?

Keep in mind this is a rough draft.

Reread some key stuff from I, Strahd and picked up some more.

My take is that since I, Strahd is penned by Strahd himself he will usually portray himself in a better light. And in regards to Leo, he finds out that Lovinia may be aligned with Leo even in being a dupe but none the less he finds out. So for me Strahd chooses to let Lovinia think she has Leo trapped in her mausoleum to complete the ruse.
He could easily use his dominate on her or various other illusion spells to make her and anyone else think he was really in there. Also he could find out if she really was in on it with Leo if she opened the tomb before she was supposed to. Since that never happens in the book we are left to contemplate.
So it all really went down in the Monastery and Leo is interred there. The monks are punished for helping him and years pass...

If there is something I maybe left out let me know.
But this appears plausible at least.

So CL 19 huh? What level would you think Strahd was when he confronted him?

Would you mind posting the full stat block, or at least
skills, special abilities/weaknesses ?

Oh now your making me think.
Strahd probably did level a few times since then. Another thing with Strahd I always redo his age to Patriarch. As in Gaz1 Strahd is a 4 Ftr/16 wiz(necromancer)
I would bet Strahd was over 10th level wiz(12) by then which seems plausible when thinking about my Leo build. Or I could be wrong and say Strahd hasn't leveled once since becoming a darklord. Which I could see as well. Personally Leo doesn't stand a chance, but thats not going to stop him. I still have ideas of him trying to enlist his family, the Ba'al Verzi (with possible takover attempt) or something else I havent thought of yet.
He certainly wont attack Strahd by himself.

We played this through last night, check the game blog for more.
He was so weak from negative levels that he got turned away. So he went to Vallaki and they lost alot of people during the night.
