If ravenloft was to be rereleased- what artists would u want

Post by NykylaiHellray »

I dont know about you lot, but the art in a few of the newer books has been very lacking. Dont even mention EtCr, as some of it was scary bad.

Personally I like puddnhead and brom.

What artists would you feel confident doing new ravenloft art?

Who is this puddnhed of whom you speak?

I personally loved Fabian's work. I know it can be a bit cartoony at times, but his portrayal of female characters was dark, sensuous, and rich - just like Gothic villainesses should be!

Talon is good, I think, as was Mark Nelson III (the guy who did most of the art in the Monstrous Compendium III and Domains of Dread). I think Nelson's and Talon's work are similar - very linear black and white style drawings with excellent shading.

Clyde Caldwell did some excellent Strahd portraits, and Parkinson did unforgettable Soth portraits too. If only one of them would pick up a paintbrush and do a good dramatic picture of Azalin!

I second HuManBing's choices, and add Claudio Pozas for his artwork in the 3E Ravenloft material.

Sadly puddheads website is down, but here is some examples of his work http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/kll01.html

Another artist who could make interesting things for ravenloft is dave mckean.

I second the votes for Clyde Caldwell and Keith Parkinson, though I frankly prefer the former for Ravenloft.

If this thread was a wish list, though, I would vote for Luis Royo and Dorian Cleavenger. Not for the nudity but for the sense of hopelessness. Really!

Throw in my vote for Talon - his art made 3rd ed. Ravenloft for me.

Add a vote for Talon, Fabian and Pozas.

And since this is a wish list, Ben Templesmith

(do a google image search in this name, plenty of things come up)

I pretty much associate Talon's portraiture of Darklords and NPCs with all of the best of Ravenloft.

Pozas and Fabian as well, and I'll be very happy.

Without a shadow of a doubt my first choice would have to be Linda Bergkvist (www.furiae.com).

My second choice would be the person(s) who painted the covers for Van Richten's Guide to Vampires, and Van Richten's Guide to The Created.

My third choice would be the artists responsible for the artwork within the three Van Richten's Monster Hunters Compendiums.

I would love to see a move away from cartoony artwork and a move to the more classic and realistic work that used to grace the 2nd Edition covers, but used inside as well as out.

The cover to Van Ritchen's Guide to the Created was brilliant. Now who was it?

Fabian had a nice style- but it worked best when everything looked that way.

So he's my choice if only one artist is to be used.

However, in the event of a mix, his style doesn't really play well with others.

Other options?

Well,I'm a bit of a philistine where art is concerned, but I'm going to veer off into wishful thinking land and say Alex Ross. Man knows his atmosphere.

Robh Ruppel was excellent, too.

Where Clyde Caldwell did a really good "Rar! Scary evil count vampire Strahd!" type of drawing, I loved Robh's later cover of Strahd in the moonlight. His was much more atmospheric and it was easier to see that the character was morally ambiguous, not just an engine of evil.

Strahd's eyes are hidden in shadow and he's looking downcast as a trail of female spirits winds their way upwards towards the harvest moon. Is he lost in contemplation? Is he penitent?

All good questions in the land of the mists, where even the darkest soul has some spark of redemption!

Robh Ruppel is pure awesome.

Talon for b/w and gothicness.
