Good books ABOUT Gothic literature

Post by Le Noir Faineant »

Hiya,

:P Jackpot for me, as my final university article (estimated length = 100 pages, estimated working time 2 years) will go about Gothic fiction in Spain.

Now, apart from the usual boasting around  , my question is, does someone happen to know some good *scientific* books about gothic literature (not in general, but about the period 1750 - 1850)? - Just to make sure I don't miss some useful stuff while working on this...

Yours,

THE PERSON FORMERLY KNOWN AS daisy :gabrielle:

I've read books written in that time frame, but not books about what was written in that time frame, other then stuff on web site and Supernatural in Litterature by HPL.

Thank you! :) That is an article that I absolutely MUST read! Didn' you write an article about HPL's works and publish it some years ago on the www, Joel? - I recall some similar talk about that during my first days on these boards... :)

Supernatural in Literature is awesome.

If you can't find this thing, I'll copy it for you and mail it.

You might look at Stephen King's Danse Macabre, which is a history of horror literature. I'm not sure how far back in time it goes, but it's worth a peek; he may also have a bibliography that could give you directions for further research.

Thank you all!

As to the essay, very cool - especially the bibliography is helpful, since the co-operations are not included there. :) I'll look what I can do with this...

As Lovecraft's famous essay and toStephen King's book - that is most intriguing, since I hadn't thought of it by any means... My subject is very specific, but I have ordered those books to my bibliotheque... Working through them will make a funny weekend...

Again, thank you!

There are two books in Sacred Texts that might interst you: Vampire His Kith and Kin and another about Werewolves whose title I don't remember.
Google for Sacred Texts and then look for Gothic.

I saw this on Amazon.com while looking for a book titled "The Gothic", "The Rise of Supernatural Fiction, 1762-1800" edited by E.J. Clery, et al.

Not sure if this helps but worth a shot.

:D Thank you! :) That one is already on my list I believe. Hehehe... So much pleasant readings for work... The Castle of Otranto would make a nice phantasmagoria, wouldn't it...

Really Sacred Texts is a site that probably has a lot of potential for Ravenloft DMs or people interested in folk lore in general (more mysticism, true, but the two things sometimes connect).
Examples:

Gypsy Folkt Tales - http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/roma/gft/index.htm
The Book of Were-Wolves - http://www.sacred-texts.com/goth/bow/index.htm
The Vampire, His Kith and Kin - http://www.sacred-texts.com/goth/vkk/index.htm
Frankenstein, Dracula, Lair of the White Worm, The Vampyre, Vikram and the Vampyre can all be found here http://www.sacred-texts.com/goth/index.htm

texts on Alchemy - http://www.sacred-texts.com/alc/index.htm

Witch Hunt (Book of Shadows) - http://www.sacred-texts.com/pag/burning.htm

It has a huge lot of books divided by themes and I can't give a true idea here, from medieval Grimoires to FBI investigations, to Native American folklore, the Bible, Sacred Sexuality, Indian and Eastern myths and etc.

The main link is this:

Oooo... I'm sure you've got some of these already, but here's a few from my bibliography...

I found Fred Botting's book, succintly titled "Gothic" to be rather good and George E. Haggerty's "Gothic Fiction/Gothic form"...

I know that opinion is divided on her, but Julia Kristeva's "Power's of Horror" was brilliant also...

Oh, and Diane Hoeveler, "Gothic Feminism" is also a nice one.

Hmm.... what else...

I know that there's an essay floating around about the "Unheimlich" but for the life of me I can't remember who wrote it... bother it, it was good too...

Oh well, hope that helps!
Now this is most interesting...
