Hm. Do dairy products in general make you ill? There *are* non-dairy substitutes out there, which is probably what my friend will have to use if she tries making this for her kosher-keeping husband.Reginald de Curry wrote:Not yet, actually. I'm still trying to figure out a good substitute for the sour cream, which . . . disagrees with me.

Hmm, you could try thickening the sauce with *checks dictionary* cornstarch and using a bit of lemon juice to add a slight sourness. Yeah, it's not the same but worth a try.leave it out and what you've got is chicken simmered in a paprika-seasoned tomato broth, which while probably tasty isn't really paprika hendl.
Edit : And if it is only sourcream you can't tolerate, you might want to try adding a bit of ordinary cream (along with the starch and lemon).
Or you could try with crème double - although this would be probably to close to the sourcream...

Yeah, that's what my mom suggested too. I asked her because I can't cook worth a damn.Dark Whisper wrote:Hmm, you could try thickening the sauce with *checks dictionary* cornstarch and using a bit of lemon juice to add a slight sourness. I made a chicken paprikash once for a game session, using (tofutti brand) soy sour cream substitute. (since I keep kosher, I don't eat milk with meat.) Don't know if it was the same recipe or not, but it worked well for mine. I was a bit scared that it wouldn't taste like sour cream, but everyone seemed to like it.
