Destroy the outsiders! The outer planes are only good as homes for deities, mortals shouldn't go there (alive).

Forgotten Realms vs Planescape

Post by alhoon »

The question is quite simple. Which setting do you prefer as an alternative for Ravenloft?

Planescape all the way down the Abyss....!

The fact that you can play a campaign in the actual planes where gods live and die, make this setting a perfect place for roleplayers of all kinds.

Planscape is my choice after Ravenloft.

Planescape all the way but I don'T condemn FR. I actually liked playing in the realms. I do joke a lot about Elminster sending countless neophyte adventurers to certain doom though.

Bah, both are merely the spawn of the evil, sent to distract us from the one true setting.

Seriously though, while Planescape is the more original, I think Forgotten Realms is the only one of the two I would play in.

All hail Planescape. Although, with some tinkering, FR works.

I actually prefer Birthright to either of them.

I actually have to agree with Cole on this one, I've played in all three camapigns worlds and although all were enjoyable, I think I enjoyed the Birthright setting the most.

Still, in answer to the actual question of this topic, the Realms and the Planes are pretty much equal as far as I'm concerned...infact, the two Campaigns worlds have actually crossed over into the other during more than one game that I've played in.

I am sure that it comes as no surprise that I prefer Planescape over Forgotten Realms. However, I wouldn't say that I have anything particular against the latter. In fact, a lot of my personal bias might be from the great deal of campaigning across the planes and very little adventuring within the realms.

Despite my experiences, I love the grittier atmosphere of Planescape. The various faction beliefs and the philosophical nature of the setting also appeals to me. While both tend to be 'high magic' settings, Planescape tends towards what you know and believe in (versus being a superpowered archmage).

I don't like high magic IMC, so I am unlikely to choose one of them.

Maybe FR more likely than PS, because I already own some books for this setting...

*EDIT*

Never leave your youth group next to your PC at 9 AM...

On the other hand, PS is far more original than FR.

Say that I'd DM FR, but only play PS.

No issues with Planescape, but I'm more familiar with and used to FR, so that's what I pick.

Playing in FR ? If I'd be desperate. DMing FR ? No. Never. Not ever.

I love Planescape, although I never really had a chance to play or even DM it ; in the decision between Ravenloft and Planescape, the latter is only second choice.
But, if by any chance and against all odds, my players survive the current Ravenloft campaign and succeed in their goals, they may escape the Realms of Dread - only to be tossed into Sigil...

I haven't really played either, but I like the idea of PS better than FR. PS seems more free in its concept, if that makes any sense. So, just what I'd like to play if it ever came to a choice.

in the end it's worthwhile,

FR's always been a little too bright and shiny a place for my tastes, but I wouldn't need a gun to my head to play in it. PS on the other hand has always been a setting I'd like to know more about but could never find the books. I have gotten my hands on a couple over the years, and always quite liked what I read. Besides, how can I not like the setting which spawned what is argueably the best computer-RPG ever, PS:Torment.

I prefer Forgotten since it's the first setting I had played! I adore also some famous Forgotten's characters as Drizzt Do Urden etc. I have no problem playing Planescape though. :P
