"Spookmaster" release may be of interest to folks

Post by Steve Miller »

ID Adventures just released another short pdf by yours truly that I think might be interest to some of you here. (I don't usually spam the Fraternity's boards, but this seems like a product that might be useful/or interest to some of you in these parts. So, if you have an extra bit of cash on hand, consider checking out Modern Advances: Spookmaster.

Here's IDA's promo copy for "Spookmaster."More details are on the product page.
IDA's Modern Advances series continues with an advanced class for a character that not only sees dead people, he considers some of them his best friends. Designed by Steve Miller (perhaps best known for his work on the Ravenloft game setting), this 12-page d20 Modern-compatible booklet presents the "Spookmaster" advanced class, new feats, a fully developed NPC, and a revised and expanded ghost template that brings this classic creature into the 21st century.
I personally think this class can bring a lot of fun to games, in the hands of the right DM and players. (A REALLY good use for it is if a PC dies. Rather than having the player roll up a new character, he can simply apply the ghost template included in this product and keep playing! Yeah, he gains a whole mess of new abilities... game-balance, blah-blah-blah, game-balance?.... I say "Try it, you might like it!")

The RPGNow sales page for the product can be viewed here. If any of you DO download it, I'd love to hear what you think. Your feedback helps me to improve my work.

If anyone picked up "Spookmaster" in these parts (and even those who didn't), swing by the product page at RPGNow.

Look for the "Demo" button. It will take you to "Modern Advances: The Freebie," a pdf with s selection of feats and magic items for use with the MA series (or pretty much any campaign... looking at Ravenloft PCs and NPCs, there are plenty of Metrosexuals and Tomboys among them. :) ) The Gloves of Ghost Catching might also be amusing. As the name implies, this little item is offered for free.

Of particular interest if you got "Spookmaster," is the Ghost Defense feat.

Comments welcomed here or on my own board, as always.

I've read Spookmaster and I'll just say it has a lot of potential for tailoring cool ghost-related abilities for Ravenloft.

Recommended. Expect a longuer review soon :)

I look forward to seeing it. Feedback is helpful, because this is an ongoing series with short release windows. Expressed likes and dislikes, as well as recommendations and random tnoughts, may have swift impact on upcoming releases.

I was sad that "Sookmaster" didn't seem to be selling well, because I think it's a good product. There seems to have been a spike in sales the last few days, so I'm less sad. :)

My thanks to everyone here to pried upon their e-wallet! :)

And double-thanks to Joel for his review!

As of this morning,"Spookmaster" has spent one week as the #1 best-selling product in RPGNow's 'd20 Modern Arcana' category! If you've never checked out an e-book before, maybe you should start with something the market seems to have a good opinion of.

('Spookmaster' is below RPGNow's minimum check-out, but you can always pick up another IDA product, or maybe something in the d20 horror category, too. And if you decide to check it out, make sure to download the free "Modern Advances: The Freebie" while there. Click on the 'Demo' button.)

Feels good. :)

And the positive review of "Modern Advances: Garden Mage" makes it even better: http://www.enworld.org/reviews.php?do=r ... id=2409397

I'm curious, how well would this work with a Ghostbusters-esque game? And is it compatible similar product, like Blood and Spooks I think it was called.
Does it work well with D&D? How would it work with a Ghostwalk campaign?

I think the Ghostbusters cartoon introduced a sidekick ghost (Slimey? Slimer?), so with a tiny bit of re-concepting the class could work for that. The included revision/updating to modern day of the ghost template certainly could. (BTW, in the early stages of design, the class could actually command ghosts. I dropped that in the final draft in favor of more detail on the ghost template.)

Since I've never looked at "Blood and Spooks," I've no idea how compatible my product is with it. The same is true of "Ghostwalk."

I think the ghost template in "Spookmaster" is better than even the one included in D&D (it's definately better than the one included in the monster book for d20 Modern, or whereever it appeared... I'm blanking on that at the moment).

Like Joel says above, it's works with Ravenloft. Go read his review. :)

Outside praise for 'Spookmaster.'

Post by Steve Miller »

Now, you don't just have to take my or Joel's word for the fact that 'Spookmaster' is a neat little product.

Here's an ENWorld review: http://www.enworld.org/reviews.php?do=r ... id=2443175

Highlights that I am particularly delighted with these portions (and the comment on how much he liked the write-up of Marion K. Bassett REALLY makes me happy!):
Next up is a "terror template", which is a new ghost template. This is a nice template, and adds a lot of "pop-culture" ghostly abilities including the ability to speak through a corpse, and the ability to disrupt electronics. I really like this template, as it has a lot of GM tools to really give a ghost a lot of flexibility and story control. It's also more fluff than crunch.

Lastly, there is an NPC named Marrion K. Bassett. Marion is a TV personality and "spookmaster" who was "medically dead" during her childhood when her parents were killed in a terrorist attack - she just barely survived, and picked up a ghostly companion as a result. In reading the background information for this character, I actually got goosebumps on my arms! It's just that good, people. The character is very well developed, with a lot of personality, and really comes to life with the information that is provided. This would make an excellent NPC in a long-term campaign, and the class itself would make a great addition to any GM wishing to add a ghostly element to their campaign.

Summary: I didn't expect much when I received this. I'd never heard of it, and read through it with a chip on my shoulder - "d20 modern? I don't know anything about d20 modern!" In the end, I fell in love with it. The NPC is incredibly realistic and detailed. The ghost template is very fluff-heavy, and allows a lot of flavor and gives the GM a lot of toys. The PrC would be a great addition to any d20 modern game wishing to add a little bit of a horror element to their game. In short, I loved it.

More praise for "Modern Advances: Spookmaster."
[...] the creativeness of the class that really make me like it. It is something different and unique. It is not just another class rehashed like seems to be the case more often then not. This is its own class not even an alternate to an existing one.
