Gendo Ikari ... Darklord of Evangelion?

End of Evangelion is an expansion on the tv series, showing the rest of the events, though the battle against thew final angel is not shown, instead it has occured sometime atter the end of episode 24 and before the benginning of the movie.

The first half of the movie takes place in the aftermath of the final battle against the angels.

The second half of the end movie begins and then cuts to episodes 25 and 26 of the series to show what is happening within Shinji's own mind while Lilith attempts to tear apart what remains of his ego and unite all humanity as the final angel that would reform all life on earth, returning everything to Eden. Shinji manages to repel Lilith's attack and hold onto his own identity, thus killing Lilith (as we see when we return to the movie).

Shinji and Asuka become the new Adam and Lilith (or perhaps Eve) and are set the task of reproducing to ensure the continued existence of humanity.

Or at least that is how it goes according to and old interview with the creators of Evangelion.
