Darcalus wasn't a real DL, only part of Darkon's false history. Most of the hints pointed at Darcalus being another pseudonym of Azalin.

As you can see from my earlier post I'm quite aware of this. I suggested that his "curse" might be that he is aware of the fact of him not being real.

How about the first Darklord of Eryie? Kravon. Instead of a flying keep, he could now have a giant zepplin-fortresse

What about Strahd?

If you use the theory that Mordent is from GE, then Strahd has visited GE in THoGH. Now, what if that was a failed coup by the Red Death to obtain the DP greatest plaything? It failed, but whilst he was on GE for a while, Strahd gained the attention of the Qabals, making Pontenagro think he is a member of El Siete.
