The Planar Handbook

Post by Drinnik Shoehorn »

Very good book. I think that it nicely complements the MoP. But in Sigil's history it doesn't mention Die, Vecna, Die!, strange.

Possibly because it was determined non-canon? It did kind of break all the rules of Sigil.

Where is Vecna now? That old bag o' bones needs another adventure.

According to Deities and Demigods, Vecna resides on Oerth.

Die, Vecna, Die breaks alot of rules. He escapes from Ravenloft as well. But it was the last 2E adventure published and used to shake-up the canon multiverse so that when 3E came along things could have said to have been the result of the big cosmic event.

True, devouring another lesser god to become a greater god was a little out of left field. Then travelling to Sigil to defeat the Lady of Pain kind of broke the number one rule of Sigilian power.

What are the races and monsters within? Did they bring back our beloved Modrons from the grave?

No modrons, but we do get Bariaur (again, so that's one appearence here, one in the MoP and one in the BoED), Shadowswyfts (plane-touched with shadow), Neraphim (sorta PC Slaad), Mephlings (PC Mephit race), Assimar and Tieflings, Spikers (PC bladelings), Buommon (Silent, singing Astral humaniods), Wildren (half badger/dwarf things) and Savage Species rules for Avorals, Kytons, Hound Archons, Janni and Lillendi.

Hmm badger dwarf things, silent singing things, and more PC races vs Modrons...hmmm. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and not buy this book.

Modrons were done as a web enhancement for the Manual of the Planes. You can get it off of Wizards website. It's pretty good. I'd check it out if you're interested.

Good to know, Drinnik, although I was rather disappointed with Manual of the Planes. Not a bad book, but it didn't cover things as well as I had hoped that it would. Perhaps, the Planar Handbook will fill in some of those gaps.

I was thinking somewhat the same thing, Coan, but there are some good deals on eBay. I was able to buy a copy at a little more than half the price. While the material might not cover the aspects that I had hoped it would, there are still many things that might be worth having (especially at a reduced price).

Actually, from the sounds of things on the Wizards of the Coast message boards, modrons are being written out of the D&D cosmology. It looks like the authors are using formians and inevitables to populate Mechanus instead.

Modrons can be downloaded at: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/modrons.zip

The link is direct to the download, it'll ask if you want to download the WE.

Drinnik posted the modron download before I could.

I don't think they're being phased out, I just think they wanted to throw in something more aggressive (formians) so that there could be another organization out there bent on mulitversal conquest.

Has there even been a rogue modron in Ravenloft?

I'm not overly pleased with the Planar Handbook, but that might be more my preference for Planescape-style rather than the 3rd edition 'the planes are a really big dungeon'-style.

For that matter is there any rogue modron stats in 3ed? I did do my own conversion but it was very basic and direct
