What I would like for QtR#30

Post by Mephisto of the FoS »

Howdy partners!
As I found last years wishing list for QtR articles really inspiring I took the freedom to create a similar post as tomokaicho had done last year.

Use this thread to make requests for the articles you would like to see in the next QtR.

I will tell you what articles I have in mind for next years issue, with some requests later on (in the future) :adam:
  • Based on the discussion we had in this forum about the Cathars and Zhakata the Provider heresy I am thinking of writing an article about Zhakata's religion. I would glad to do it with G'Henna expert IanFordam if interested or could have variations of it as with Markovia in QtR #29 to have more cherries for everyone to pick what they like.
  • I am in the making of Cyclops Legacy III which is going to feature alchemical devices from the Falkovnian Ministry of Science.
  • Gazetteer to Arkandale
An article on Arkandale and it's change into Verbrek inspired by Mississippian culture as a false history of Arkandale's past and the worship of the Wolf God. I am inclined into presenting the people of the domain as settlers who massacred the previous natives but the elders of Arkanale still remember stories about the Wolf God that these natives worshipped.

I found some parts described in the obsidian portal very interesting
https://ravenloft-shadowfallen.obsidian ... /arkandale
especially the following...

While Arkandale may seem like a poor fit for the Forest of Beasts, it mainly exists here as a counterpoint to the vast wilderness, treating man as the real animal. Humans metaphorically prey on each other in Arkandale, turning civilization into a sham—a thin veneer on top of a “dog eat dog” world. Arkandale is the “proof” to the Cult of the Wolf God’s claims that humans are worse than animals; wolves don’t keep slaves, after all.

So I am thinking of including slavery and small river plantations but making them distinct from imported enslaved people (as it was in real history Mississippi) to impoverished and bankrupt people some brought to that state by gambling debts or treachery, who "willingly" enslave themselves and their families for years (or even generations for really large debts) with "legal" contracts to the corrupt rich, debt bondage.

In Mississippi plantations were developed primarily along the major rivers, where the waterfront provided access to the major transportation routes. This is also where early towns developed, linked by the steamboats that carried commercial products and crops to markets.

These settlements have declined after the Grand Conjunction since Alfred Timothy organised many attacks on these settlements and plantations. The few declined plantation owners that still exist are either ruthless humans or (decadent in Alfred's eyes) werewolves while some people who were liberated by the werewolves may have become adherents of the Wolf God or werebeasts themselves, now roaming freely in the woodlands of Verbrek.

A description and analysis on the steamboats that exist on this part of the Musarde (and a possible reason why they don't exist everywhere). An inclusion of The Sea Wolf adventure from Dungeon Magazine #55 which I think is more appropriate for Arkandale than the Sea of Sorrows, as well as rules for gambling and casino based adventures.

Last but not least the history of Nathan Timothy, the destruction of his steamboat casino? (shown in Realm of Terror darklord cards) and the Virago.

One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi...

Oh man, the 30th edition of QtR. Thanks for putting up a wishlist thread, Mephisto, as I have a few suggestions. Namely:
  • Any content on Kalidnay, Farelle, Rokushima Taiyo, Sanguinia, Vorostokov, 5e Kalakeri, 5e Har'Akir, 5e Valachan, the Wildlands, Bluetspur, Nidala, the Phantasmal Forest, Sri Raji, or Kislova
  • Any contributions from users like Rock or Mistmaster on their own projects like the Mistworld or the Wartorn Cluster, as those are a joy to read
  • Something detailing the 5th sect of Ezra perhaps? Or the Time of Unparalleled Darkness, maybe or maybe not in accordance with the notes that Ryan Naylor and the other Kargatane left on the messageboards?
  • More adaptations of third party content into Ravenloft, like what Hell_Born did with Grim Hollow. Maybe something with Kobold Press' Midgard campaign setting or others? How to adapt 5e modules (third party or official) into Ravenloft with a few alterations?
  • Casebook of Alanik Ray! A bunch of NPCs and related adventures that Arthur Sedgewick recorded the great detective Alanik Ray facing in his long career
  • Van Richten's Files on Horrors from the Deep, to go with the (eventual) SoS Gazetteer :D
  • Another Children of the Night! Whether it be liches or oozes or beasts or plants or dragons or giants or elementals or fey, another would always be great to see!
  • Some love for I'Cath would be great to see too!
  • Some secrets of the Gentleman Caller? Like his goals or what the rest of his children are like and where they're from (could definitely use the Portuguese netbooks we managed to find and recover)?
  • More adventure modules in neglected domains would be great! Things like spiritual successors to Dark of the Moon or Neither Man nor Beast (IanFordam gave us that great Return of Diosamblet adventure so something along those lines would be interesting)
  • An article detailing how the natives of the land react to Outlanders in greater detail than what's shown in canon. Meaning, do people just assume that Outlanders come from somewhere else in the Mists? Do they institutionalize them? Something juicy on how Outlanders have affected others, like academies of high science pontificating on the supposed 'Outlander experience' or certain jobs being given to Outlanders to settle into the native community (because no native wants to do those jobs) or ghettos of Outlanders, with maybe one or two trying to find a way back home even if the rest of the Demiplane must be destroyed
  • Literally anything on the Duskreach Cluster that was alluded to in the Nocturnal Sea Gazetteer. Anything at all!

This could be a separate project as most CotN were. A competition perhaps as was done in Paths of Corruption?

I have something in the works (don't know if it will be done by October though (maybe a little bit at a time...) I don't know what the Portuguese netbooks have done with this though.

This is interesting, though I am more inclined into having native players, for sure we know what happens to Outlanders who stay too long n Darkon though.

I almost made a joke about including an undead Zaratan in the article that I've considered writing as a sequel to "Secrets of Pharazia".

And then I realized I'm probably not joking.

I like this.
As do I. Though it could be a bit tricky imitatating Doyle's style for any length without sounding cheesy. Then again, you could always go the Sam Spade/Phillip Marlowe/Raymond Chandler route... :P

"Far off the banshee screech of of a watchman's whistle echoed, never for very long was it completely silent. Twenty-four hours a day somebody is running and somebody else is trying to catch him. Out there in the night of a thousand crimes people were dying, being maimed, devoured by monsters, crushed under wagons or simply vanishing. People were being beaten, robbed, strangled, raped and murdered. People were hungry, sick, bored, desperate with loneliness or remorse or fear, angry, cruel, feverish, shaken by sobs. A land no worse than others, a land rich and vigorous and full of pride, a land lost and beaten and full of emptiness." modified from "The Long Goodbye"

Hmmm, now what was I saying about cheesy again.....? :P
Someone sent me a postcard picture of the earth. On the back they had written, "Wish you were here."

Seaspawn Lords and Larvae are under Ravenloft Seaspawn as for the Seaspawn Zombie isn't this covered by VRGttRestlessDead as is the Lacedon? Seawraiths are covered by VRGtGhosts.

I was wondering what was the official intent of VRGtTerrors/Horrors from the Deep? Do we have an idea what the Ravenloft designers intended?

I know that there were ideas being discussed for Reavers, Sahuagin and Kuo-Toa back when the SOS Gazetteer was supposed to be released in 2011-2012, and I only know that because I went on a deep dive of the old archives of these here forums out of curiosity. I believe Rotipher and DeepShadow were the ones who made a thread on it. But for now, I think everything in light blue is good and while I’d be curious to see what a Ravenloft dragon turtle or sea serpent would be like, the seas are a bit too small for such big creatures. That won’t stop me from putting a Dragon Turtle’s corpse in my Saragoss re-write…

That’s true! I’ll have to remember that if I ever get around to that proposed Scattered Lotus Cluster the Kargatane were talking about back in the day. And by the way Mephisto, speaking of the Kargatane, one of the Portuguese netbooks has an interview with Steve Miller regarding the Gentleman Caller and his plans that might be of interest to you. We have them now, thanks to Lucifer Abaddon and Joel.

Hadn't seen that, thanks! Although I will have to copy paste the whole thing on an online translator

What happened to this?
Following the FoS sea projects, Sharon’s cool sea monster netbook VRF: Terrors of the Deep, is in the work, and about 60% is written.

People wishing to help on this can contact Sharon, as there are still a few monsters that need writing – Kraken, morkoth, kopru, sea spawn, sea serpents/sea dragons, sea lycanthropes (seawolves is done), and we’d like to add a Saragoss overview (all the other seas have an introductory "natural history" piece about them, but not this place) and a sea-hunter PrC?

We always need Dread Possibilities on all sea monsters, the more we have, the more interesting those critters become.

This great netbook will be illustrated by Isabella, yes the one of the Starcrossed comic strip fame, but other artists can contact Sharon as well. Isabella's done wonders so far, but we’d feel bad asking her to do all of the book, so finding more artists would be good!

Or to the Sea Monster Salient Ability contest submissions?

You’re welcome friend! It’s honestly been quite the treasure trove of content, even if I have to bust out the old translator. DeepL has been good to use, FYI! As to what happened to that, no idea. You might want to ask some of the veteran FoS members? It looked really promising, I can tell you that much from what you posted and found (and from the talk of it back in the day that I found immortalized on the message boards; I’m still pretty new here lol).
