Bennedict slumps down into a chair, eyes blank and staring at the wall with mute horror mixed with despair. He blinks several times, plucking a handkerchief from his pocket and covering his mouth for a moment as nausea sits in.

"There were cultists. Villains who were opening a gateway to the realms of infernal creatures. Their activities were afflicting the city with a storm of ash and snow. We arrived after the gateway was opened and tried to close it. It...there was a mishap. We were drawn through as it closed, and we landed in the swamp."
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

The Provost says,
''This sounds bad indeed. It reminds me of something...''
He frowns.
''But I can't recall what.
I can think of three ways I may be able to help your party:

I can send you straight to the Governor. Her past as an adventurer and her present authority and contacts might prove useful in figuring out how to get you home.

Or I could send men with you into the Vast Swamp, to see if there's some trace of the magic that sent you hither--but detection of such magic must fall to you.

And if those two courses don't appeal to you, I can send Dorn to escort you into the Republic of Sembia, to the city of Daerlun. From there, surely you can find a sage knowledgeable about magical gateways and lore of other worlds, though it may require further travels.''

Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

ewancummins wrote:''Being stationed in the verge of the Vast Swamp is not a comfy posting, yes, but one would hardly call it hell. I assure you you're very much in the land of the living. As far as theological writings, I'm afraid I have none on hand. I can arrange a visit to our shrine here, if you'd like. ''
To that, Klokulf responds, "That could prove most useful. To whom is this shrine dedicated?"

The Provost answers Klokulf,
''It holds images of Helm the Watchful and of other gods.''

He looks around the room, studying the faces of his stranded, lost guests.

An owl's hooting filters through the shuttered window.

The Provost says,
''I have work to do, other duties to discharge, so you must excuse me. Take the night to decide how you'd like to proceed, if you like. We'll speak again after you've had some sleep and a breakfast.''
