Changelings part I: 27 Charity Street

"I can certainly arrange a translator for you. There are several reputable persons in the market who may suit. I fear it is getting a little late today, but I can have one call around ten tomorrow."

He pauses and take another drink of tea.

"As for the house, it is a century or so old, but I believe it is the last few owners only who have complained of trouble. I believe about ten years ago a foreigner rented it, and committed suicide there. Since then some have believed it to be haunted. If you wish more details your neighbour on the south side is an authority of sorts"

The innkeeper seems delighted by Gorn's custom, taking his coin with a broad grin that does not touch his eyes in the slightest. The clientele seems of the lower classes, but prosperous lower class: employed men with regular incomes. The atmosphere is quiet and the customers are gathered in tight knots, with considerable space between them. As Gorn looks around one man catches his eye and nods at an empty chair at his table.

The huge Caliban nods back. Leaving his place at the bar he walks towards to man and when he arrives, he grabs the chair. Turning it around he sits with his arms on the backrest after he takes more than a healthy drag of ale. "Gorn's tha name. BURRRRRRRP!" Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand first, he then puts out his hand to shake the man's.

"Yes this will be very helpful. May you please tell me his name Mr. Witherington?"

Mr Witherington smiles

"Of course! In fact, I can write you a letter of introduction. He's another client of ours. His name is Samuels. Lemuel Samuels."

He produces a quill pen, and begins to write, then hands Helfried a letter, introducing him and Catherine as worthy and respectable persons.

The man gazes at Gorn for a moment, then smiles and shakes his hand.

"Rupert. How d'yer do. We don't see many Calees up in the bowels. Job huntin' are yer?"

[VAN]

"Thank you very much Mr Witherington, this will be very helpful. Mr Samuels does speak my language right?"

[steveflam]

Gorn downs his ale and waves down for another. "I got a job, I think. Apparently I live in a house here and bin hired fer some
job. Well, dunno why no Calees come down here. Though I needs a freakin permit ter walk around fer fooks sake. People muss be
stoopid on us or somethin." He takes a puff on his cigar. HE goes on to describe the house he thinks he lives in, adding. "Oh yeah, we even gots a gardener. I fergit his name but I'll call him Clyde cuz I like the sound of it. So whatter you do fer a livin, Rupert?"

Witherington nods

"you have a slight accent, but you will have no trouble conversing with anyone here."

Rupert grins at Gorn

"I'm a removals man. Never done your pad though. What's it like? wealthy joint?"

[steveflam]

Gorn raises an eyebrow at Rupert's comment. "By removals , yer meanin like I gots a problem, I hire you to remove it? That kin' of removals? As fer the house, I can't say. I think it might be but I don' care cuz I don' care much fer pretty or quality shit cept fer my ale n cigars. Dames are a dime a dozen. Can yer tell me where I kin fin Calees? I might head there fer a hoot some time while I'm in da city."

[VAN]

"That's good."

Catherine turns at the man that was translating for Halfierd adn says:

"Can you please ask him if he has anything else to ask? If no I think we should leave we have already wasted very much of Mr Witherington's time."

Helfried shakes his head in response to the mans translation for Cathrine. He then makes to rise from his chair and gives Mr. Witherington a curt nod of appreciation.

[VAN]

"Ok then. I think we are done for now. Thank you very much for your time and help Mr Witherington."

Catherine shakes firmly Mr Witherington hand and heads at the door. But turns last second and asks the translator:

"May you tell Halfierd that we will go look for Gorn that will be probably in a place with food, drink or women and not a very classy one I bet. And can you tell us where can we find these places in the city please?"

The clerk nods and gives a couple of likely addresses. The pair is shown out with the ceremony appropriate for the owners of such wealth: which is to say, a lot.

As they make their way back down the thronging streets, the sun is sinking slowly as afternoon begins to turn into early evening. The sky has cleared a little and the rain is no longer pounding the cobblestones. It is still none too warm though.

In the inn, which the pair will take a little time to find, Rupert laughs.

"naw mate... removals! house moves, ya know? shiftin' stuff out of houses. If there's anything good to move in your employer's house, you might get a commission..."

Catherine needs barely two seconds to spot the big caliban in the inn. She has been in such places before and she knows what kind of clients they have...So rushes to join Gorn and with an innocent smile says:

"Hey Gorn, finally found you. I saw you already made a friend, nice. But is getting late and is better to go back now."
