THE SHADOW CITY
VAN wrote:Filbert opens his eyes and found himseld at the sinister Shadow Realm. He checks the surroundings to make sure there isn't a monster or undead around and says:

"Are you both ok? If you feel dizzy it is normal so don't worry. This world is slightly different from the one you are used to. You will always have the feeling of someone is watching you, maybe hear voices or see red spots that can be eyes. The worse part is that you dn't know if is indeed someone or something hiding or is your phantasy. Stay close to me, I'm not an expert but I have been here few times and can recognize few things when I see them. The distance here is how to say, not real, long distance can be covered in few minutes the land maybe is different as well, things use to change fast in this world. Don't eat or drink anything if possible because it may be poisonous. Our plan is reach the dwarf, which I suppose is a prisoner, and free him or if is an enemy kill him. Now if you have no more questions please follow me and keep your eyes open and of course have your weapons ready."

With that Filbert draws his sword and starting to head outside of the house.

With Filbert in the lead, the little party makes its way out of the will-o-wisp haunted room and into a long, gloomy hallway.
Perhaps the Halfling can see better in this dark place than can his human companions, or maybe instinct guides him, but Filbert soon finds a door that leads out of the black stone building.

An open court studded with dead white tree trunks like the fingertips of a buried giant stretches out before the trio. Beyond that, at a distance that seems to vary from moment to moment, looms an ebon wall twice a man's height. An open gate pierces the wall, just wide enough for one man at a time to pass.

A gust of wind shrieks through the narrow gate across the courtyard, carrying with it a cool, damp smell like the bottom of a well-- or a riverbank.

If Filbert and his friends step out of the door and into the courtyard and then turn round,

Uncharacteristically nervous, Renn runs a finger over one of the fletches on his nocked arrow, as if to reassure himself, and follows Filbert.

THE SHADOW CITY

Lilting music and soft laughter sound from someplace down the gloomy hallway behind the three.

The wind blows through the courtyard before them, carrying a swirling mass of snowflakes as broad as a man's hand, which weren't visible a moment ago. The flakes melt in air and transform into white crows, which fly above Filbert's party in tight circles, cawing incessantly.

The change of the surroundings doesn't surprise the halfling, he focuses on the right path to proceed. When sees the narrow gate he points it and says:

"We need to pass through this gate which should be the way to the river, get to the edge of the water, and then return to the Prime world. Hopefully that way we should get very near to the wharf, where we can intercept the Alameins headed towards the big barge where should be the dwarf."

Fighting the temptation to linger in fascination or flee in blind terror from the strange sights around them, the party escapes from the shadow city through the narrow gate and hastens over a bleak, marshy strip between the ebony walls and the sluggish river.

When they reach the river margin, Filbert and his friends spot shapes moving under the water—upside down boats and swimming things that might be men. Even with just a moment’s glance the watchers get a sense of being submerged, looking up.

Rennalt coughs, spitting cold water through his lips. Devlin begins to shiver. Filbert feels clammy, unseen hands feeling through his clothes, pressing in on his ribcage and pinching his limbs.

This doesn't look good. Roald thinks as he urges his warhorse into a cantor, making sure to keep himself and Reese in the middle of the formation.

Looking ahead, Roald sees several dozen of the poor bloody infantry-- irregulars mostly lacking armor and half of them carrying spades and wood axes in place of proper military arms-- rush in and push back some of the scorched, disorganized defenders. Some of these footmen frantically wedge and push hunks of wood and stone out of the way to widen the gap for the horsemen to charge into the city.

Drawing near the smoking portal, Roald sees the length of the fish market stretched out before him, perfect ground for a sweep to clear a large beachhead. Over the pounding of hooves beneath and all about him, he hears full-throated shouts and the stamping of feet at his back. Kettle drums roll without cease. More horn blasts.

The broken gate looms just ahead now...

Cormac falls into step next to Foerde.

"I spoke to yeh before about my plans to head outside the walls an' take the fight to the goblins. I wanna lead raids, fight 'em on their terms, an' let the people know that there's good folks out there strugglin' for 'em."

He looks across the courtyard towards the kids. "The folks here feel like they've lost a'ready. They've abandoned what their Duke taught 'em, that it was their duty to go fight for their homes. Even Ranald seems hesitant to go out of his manor walls. It's understandable. They want to protect their families. Can't fault 'em fer tha'. But I got a bad feelin' that help ain't comin', an' by the time these folks find their backbones the gobs will already have taken what they want. But, if they hear about a band o' brigands out in the field, givin' the blighters a taste o' what they been servin' up, maybe they find their backbones quicker." He stops, his face getting grimmer. "Or maybe they don'. But either way, I'd rather go fight in the field than stand here in this place. Out there we're free. In here..." He grimaces. "I'm startin' to feel like an indentured man."

He turns to Foerde, stopping their walk now that they're out of earshot. "I'm askin' yeh, because while Foerde the beast-man don' exactly inspire a ton o' confidence in the people, yer other face..." he draws the silence out for a moment, "...that'd get people to rally. I want yeh to head out with us. I'm leavin' tonight, whether Ranald thinks he can 'let us' leave or not. I'll give him his day o' peace, since it'll take that long to find a safe campsite anyways, but he ain't my lord and I doubt many o' my men feel much loyalty to him either after they didnae help rescue you. There's a place for you with us, if yeh feel like joinin'."
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Roald signals Reese to stay close and draws his sword. If he can, he rides up to the boy on the pony with the banner and attempts to grab it from him.

"Thank you!" Roald says as he pulls the banner out of the boy's hand. He then waves it over his head to make it sure the entire formation sees it, and then turns his horse hard right, away from the gate.

Roald tears the pole with the scarf fixed to the top loose from the surprised boy's grip.
The kid shouts something, but over all the noise Roald can't quite understand him. It might have been 'Duck!'

Roald jerks to the right, lurching in the saddle. His horse rears, spins, gallops along the wall away from the open gate.

Behind him, the ENTIRE company of light horse, dozens and dozens of riders, wheel to follow their green scarf banner!
