I see that he has his starting NWPs, plus four bonus slots from high INT, plus a skill from the " no kit" benefit.
How many's it supposed to be? Went by the class description that just said they start with those four weapon proficiencies.
That is correct if we use the default rule. You just brought up something I have not thought much about in years.

As per the PHB:
Weapon proficiencies are ''tournament'' rules, optional in regular play.
NWPs are optional, period.

Hell, let's keep it simple.

Screw weapon proficiencies. Everyone can fight with the weapons listed under his class description at no penalty.
Pick something else up, take the listed penalties from the proficiencies chapter.

This means Alhoon's fighter can fight with ANYTHING at no penalty, except for things imposed by size and such.

Note that Alhoon's fighter still gets weapon spec, if he likes. No reason not to take it.

I just made it ''free" for fighters in general. That seems like the best way to combine the class description with the default ''no slots needed'' approach to weapons.

It also makes fighters a wee bit cooler. With no reason not to take weapon spec, fighters will assumedly all specialize in something. Boxing, polearms, bows, mastery of the shield, etc.

Remember that the vast majority of soldiers, town guards, etc will be 0 level types. They cannot specialize.

If I do this, a lot of the optional stuff in the Fighter's Handbook goes out the window, though. Style spec goes away. I am fine with that.

Let rangers be the masters of two weapon fu.

Indeed, if we really want to simplify-- what about ditching KITS entirely and just giving everyone two bonus NWP slots to be used on general skills?
That leaves the thieves in the party essentially unchanged. Their kits really don't do anything special.
It gives everyone extra skills.

Right, she is not affected either way. You will not need to change anything. Her kit does nothing but give free skills. If everybody gets those, it comes out the same. Zero need for rewrites, Steve.

(The only diff for her would be:
Core rules mean she can use her whip, a dagger, a hunting bow, a sap, whatever at no penalty. Any " thief" type weapon.
This is what Adam assumed, and he was correct that it is the straightforward reading of my " core rules" comment in the initial post.

Optional WP rules mean she can only know how to properly use two weapons at first level; everything else takes a penalty.)

Of which I am aware of and it is marked on her sheet she onnly knows whip and dagger I believe.

^According to this ruling she would know everything though, is what I think Ewan is trying to say. (Everything that is thief based we can use) It looks like you and me just did an extra step of picking specific weapons we were familiar with when we don't have to.

Awesome. Less book-keeping. :)
And we get -2- NWP?
That's literacy for Fild. In TWO languages.
Speaking of that, does it make sense since Fild was risen in a ghetto inside human community to be semi-literate in gnomish while literate in human (before you look at the side-ways, VAN insists that it's possible, not me).

That's my skills so far: (2 bonus, 2 intelligence, 3 from warrior)
literacy gnomish (2)
literacy common (2)
plumbing
Set snares
Language: Burrowing Mammals
"You truly see what a person is made of, when you begin to slice into them" - Semirhage
"I am not mad, no matter what you're implying." - Litalia

Actually my weapons were by choice, not familiarity. It is what she knows how to and wants to use. And she uses her weapons in her trade, not to fight.

Didn't mean to miss communicate again. I wasn't suggesting you were familiar with the weapons just that your character was familiar. Also didn't mean to imply she uses the weapons to fight with, was strictly talking proficiencies of which looks like Ewan just wants to give us all the weapons our class dictates as being possible to be used by said class. :)

Anyways, I'm cool with that Ewan, I'll delete the WP from my sheet though I may go back and add all the ones I'm capable of using now. :)

Right-o.

Whip to whip guard dogs back from her, knife for prying stuff open?
