Markovia! Why is it named after a guy of whom hardly anyone has ever heard? Why would it be marked this way on maps? Island of Doctor Mor...I mean Markov.

Darkon- I just don't dig the name.

Azalin is a girl's name, which strikes me as strange. Maybe in some future RL tabletop game I'll actually have Azalin Regina, Queen of [ some name other than Darkon].

I agree with others who have voiced a dislike of the Nazification of Falkovnia. It's King Vlad, not KFVD, darn it!

Ghastria.....I like the lord and the domain has potential, but the obvious name I do not like. Gastronomical ....meh.

Nocturnal Sea-
Where are the Crespucular Bay and the Diurnal Mere located?

I use the Shrouded Sea [but my version does have a normal period of daylight- it's just tends to be quite foggy and overcast].

Shadow Rift- The name just doesn't grab me.

AVONLEIGH!!!!! The darklord is really Anne of Green Gables, I suppose...

I like Markovia-it fits with the Balok naming scheme. As far as why, just have Markov be mildly famous for discovering the island.

Actually never thought of it that way myself, but one of my players did play a female Aasimar in another campaign and named her Aaslynn.

Yeah, generally, I like the hidden meanings of the names in other languages, but that's just it, I like them hidden. Not blatant. At least Drakov's elite are the Talons and not the Striking Sparrows.

Well, I see the points of everyone above. I actually do that kind of thing for my characters. For example, I once made an elver archer / mage who was called Elwereth Arìsilach, or a human barbarian who was Duíne Mor... or my Karenya Astivar, who died recently.

Granted, these are not obvious names, but they all try to mean something. Astiver is a composition of words from Old Norse (straight out of the dictionary) meaning 'loved by the gods' (ok, trying to mean, I don't know the grammar anyway), Duíne Mor is 'big man' or 'big person' in Gaelic, Elwereth Arìsilach was taken from a dictionary of elvish names I found on the net and supposedly means 'Arcane Heart' (Elwereth) and Silvered Moonbow (Arìsilach).

The easiest I have made is the one I use in the Café de Nuit: Plancturus --> 'that who will weep' in Latin.

But it's still a bit hidden, anyway

The Kargatane's website was filled with the names and where they came from.

Azalin is actually from Azal'an, the title of the great wizard from the Great Kingdom of Aerdy in Greyhawk, back when there was a Great Kingdom.

The Ghastria/Gastria connection I touched on in the Unauthorized Biography. Baron D'Marosso lives the name dichotomy.

"Hazlik" is close to the German "Haßlich" which means "ugly."

Invidia comes from a Latin root for envy, used in "invidious."

Malocchio means "evil eye" in Italian.

Paridon is a portmanteau of Paris and London.

Really, the entire history of Ravenloft is peppered with double-entendre names, all meaning nasty stuff.

Don't play with anybody with any knowledge of 20th Century philosophers.
Otherwise, the whole exercise becomes some sort of hideous meta-pun.

Unfortunately, it wasn't an island when it was named. But Markov was rather infamous when he was driven into the Mists by his fellow Barovians, so it could be that the newly-emerged wilderness was named for the notorious fugitive known to have fled into that region.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think Ankhtepot's name is a little, well, stupid sounding?

It might translate and be a meatphor or something but I had to rename him when we played ToD, as the published name just caused my players to have giigling fits every time it got mentioned.

"Hang on the awesome BBEG Pharoah is called something Tea-pot?!!?"

True, although pronouncing it "Ank-Teh-Pote" might help avoid the giggles.

Perhaps "Anhktuat" would be better? That would translate as something along the lines of "He who serves the realm of the dead".
