Michael Jackson's "Thriller"

Post by Dion of the Fraternity »

I was walking around the mall's department store last night and the DVD department featured the complete video of "Thriller," which was filmed around 1984 or something. Slowly a crowd gathered around, watching the film from beginning to end.

The 80's are back, that's for sure. But does anyone else have a feeling of nostalgia for this video, with the zombies and stuff?

Yes, I do. I was already a college grad, married, and had our first child in 1984. I remember well watching the Thriller video on MTV, wishing I had one of those 'video cassette recorders' so I could see it whenever I wanted. :azalin:

And I remember a time when videotaping it would've been entirely beside the point, because MTV's management insisted they play it every hour, on the hour.

I was only a baby when that video was new, but I got nostalgic for it around last Halloween all the same. So I looked for it on youtube, and I found this priceless gem:

I don't think I even saw the video until a few years ago, but I remember hearing the song all the time back in grade school.
Pinky! Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

I think so, Brain, but didn't we give up ritual murder for Lent?

We didn't have cable either. I somehow got to see the whole thing once (At a friends house, or perhaps on a different channel?) but then had to settle for my talking view-master version:

I saw it put inexplicably before a screening of Fantasia in a theater (maybe Disney was trying to sweeten the Captain EO deal?). The under-10s in the crowd mostly freaked out pretty badly (actually, around 8 or older-- especially boys-- were more likely to be going "Coooool...").

Brandi, was that before or after you met Vincent Price (something I've always been envious of!)? I always enjoyed his vocal contribution to 'Thriller'.

Thriller is a work of art from a simpler time, when music videos were ascendant, Vincent Price still alive, and Micheal Jackson still black.

Rather before... I met Price after the release of Great Mouse Detective, in 1986, and I think this Fantasia release was in '82 when the Thriller video was still hot stuff.

Those were the days my friends, we'd thought they'd never end...
