Well,seeing as how you're using 3E Masque,why not-
A) increase the Adept's HD by one step(D6) and eliminate the Abstracted penalty for Mediums.
B) eliminate"spells" per se,and the casting time and corruption problems as well.Adepts get Cantrips only at Lvl 1 and Cantrips only as they advance.Mediums now get Orisons(D&D) the same way.No reduced casting times or Powers checksfor these Lvl 0 spells(barring the usages and intent of course),just a limit on uses per day-allow Ability Bonuses for Cantrips and Orisons,it shouldn't be too unbalanced.Concentration is still used if the caster is damaged/distracted as usual.
C) Use Ritual Magic from Unearthed Arcana...long casting times, rare ingredients and powerful effects, along with the chance of catastrophic failure.Forbidden Lore is the operant skill here...Adepts get Rituals via Research,Mediums get them according to Domain, the spirits instructing the Medium as he or she advances in Level and is deemed"worthy". Powers checks always accompany Ritual Magic, successful castinng or not.
D) the Medium has other powers at thier disposal besides spells, while Adepts do not.Consider giving Adepts Access to D&D Item Creation Feat, while removing the Spell Feats entirely.Such items would not be permanent,so Craft Item would be available at 1st Level and cover Rings,Wands,Potions etc. according to Player preference and matching Skill. As a player option, research that would normally be devoted to discovering Rituals may instead be devoted to Item Recipies-the ability to craft a special, temporary magic into an Item that goes beyond Cantrips...aka a prepared Spell in another form.

So:
Old combat- Rudy the Adept hangs back, waiting to cast a spell...."mumblemumblerazzzamattazOWWWWW!"(gets shot, spell fizzles, makes a Power check, fails)"screw this, where's my revolver? And why did my eyes just turn red?"
New combat-Rudy the Adept Dazes the Houngan with a Word, Disrupts the Zombie with another while his companions keep the Houngan busy.Upon getting a stray bullet in the shoulder,Rudy retreats behind a suit of armor and pulls out a tiny flask of Vin Extraordinare-Injury Averted(Item Creation coupled with Profession:Winemaker) and downs it,regretting the cost(fiftyPounds and 10 XP down the throat).A henchman pulls the trigger of his revover as Rudy stands up and gapes as the bullet arcs and hits the wall(Injury Averted=Mage Armor) and then feels the skin on his face grow cold and crack as the Adept gestures commandingly...
Later, upon learning of the Houngan's escape,Rudy weighs the costs of letting the murderer go free to start evil anew against the dangers of the Ritual of the Huntsman's Hounds...not only would he risk his properties and very life should they break free of his will,he would be sending them to kill a human being, risking a descent into the same Evil that had consumed the Houngan...
The next day, decision made(and Will updated) Rudy dons his robes and prepares the silver chalice, the concoction of gol-inpregnated wax and his own blood-and begins the day of fasting and chanting...
"And did she ever come out?"
"Not Yet".
