Contemporary Real And Fictional Characters In Gothic Earth

Post by Olly »

Encouraged by Lady Ligeia, I have decided to start up a sister thread to the Historical, Movie and Literary Characters In Gothic Earth thread, this time, centering around characters from other time periods, besides the Victorian era.

I'll start us off with perhaps the most instantly recognisable of all the recent monsters of cinema...

Freddy Kreuger
Chaotic evil - Bogeyman

In life, Freddy was a vile paedophile and child murderer, killed by an angry lynch mob. However, the Red Death is not one to turn down an opportunity to wreak terror and havoc upon the innocent, and so, Freddy returned in a monstrous new guise, to terrorise children where their parents cannot protect them. In their nightmares.

Though he can appear however he likes, due to his ability to manipulate dreamscapes, in his true form, Freddy appears as a tall, rat-faced man, covered in horrific burns, dressed in a tattered, green and red striped sweater and a ragged trilby hat. His most ferocious feature, however, is his 'claw', a leather glove, with impossibly sharp blades attached to the fingers. His victims often appear to have been clawed or stabbed, although sometimes their corpses may be cocooned in their own bed linen, strung up by their veins as ghastly marionette puppets or torn into a thousand pieces... if they are found at all...

Freddy currently stalks the dreams of the youth of Elm Street, although it is thought that the Red Death may have plans to extend the range of his predations to elsewhere in the United States.

From: Nightmare On Elm Street (obviously!)
Home is behind,
The world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread,
Through shadow,
To the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.

Mist and shadow,
Cloud and shade,
Hope shall fail,
All shall fade.

A historical figure from my neck of the woods:

Nelson Rehmeyer
Dread Scarecrow/Rushlight (Mystic 11)

In 1928, three Pennsylvania men named John Blymire, Wilbert Hess and John Curry murdered an aged man named Nelson Rehmeyer, who lived in the vicinity of York, Pa. The three suspected that Rehmeyer was a Hexenmeister, or curse-layer. All three were sentenced to prison and all three were eventually released. But the spirit of Nelson Rehmeyer was anchored to his home, and even today haunts the grounds.

Most of the time, his tortured spirit stalks the grounds in the form of a scarecrow, exercising his blind hatred against all living things that fall into his grasp - including residents of the nearby burg of Winterstown and possibly even livestock from neighboring farms.

The current residents of his now-restored home are thralls to the will of the long-dead sorcerer, and scheme above all else to bring descendants and relatives of Hess, Blymire, and Curry to "Rehmeyer's Hollow". The ghost of Nelson can manifest itself as a ball of fire (a rushlight) that mutters and shouts.

In scarecrow form, he has no special powers, but in rushlight form Rehmeyer's ghost has access to the curse spells from the Magic domain (as an 11th level mystic).

Heh heh... This thread is good so far... I hope it'll grow as big as the other one! ;)

And now, for that other sharp-handed chap from the silver screen...

Edward Scissorhands
Neutral good - Half-golem

Edward is a gentle soul who hides from outsiders in his father's old and overgrown abode. His hair is black and tangled and his skin is pale as bone-china, as he seldom sees sunlight. Numerous scars criss-cross his otherwise handsome features. Although at first glance, he appears to be a perfectly normal young man, closer inspection reveals that, instead of hands, he has a collection of numerous razor-sharp blades. Apparently, Edward is the unfinished 'child' of a mad, but kind and benevolent scientist, who died before he could give his creation a normal set of hands, leaving him with his namesake 'scissorhands'.

Edward is painfully shy and withdrawn, but inherently kind, gentle and harmless, believing that goodness and honesty are qualities that everyone possesses; a true innocent. Once Edward's trust is gained, he is a friend for life, assisting in any way that he can. However, he is easily frightened and should be treated more like a nervous, naive, young infant, too afraid to step into the chaotic kindergarten of the real world.

Should Edward ever be threatened with physical violence, he will flee rather than fight, although may strike blows if cornered. It is unknown if Edward would fare particularly well in combat, since he is not a violent character by nature. However, considering the potential for destruction contained within the blades that make up his fingers, it seems likely that, if he ever wanted to, he could be quite formidable.
Home is behind,
The world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread,
Through shadow,
To the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.

Mist and shadow,
Cloud and shade,
Hope shall fail,
All shall fade.

Jason Voorhees
Dread Revenant - Chaotic Evil

Jason has a disfigured child that was traumatised and bullied at Camp Crystal Lake in the 1950's by the other children while the camp leaders were busy pursuing other interests. He was eventually thrown into the lake and drowned. Some 20 years later his mother returned to the camp to take vengeance on the camp leaders at that time and neary succeeded. One lone survivor escaped her bloody rampage and managed to kill her in the doing so. Escaping onto the lake she was nearly rescued when the resurrected child form of Jason came up and dragged her down into the deep waters of the lake. On that day the legend of the Crystal Lake murders began to take form.

Several years later, a killer went on a killing spree similar to the one that has occurred. The killer was unveiled to be none other than Jason Voorhees, now returned to life as an adult. He was eventually killed.

Time after time, Jason has returned from beyond the grave, each time killing many people. He has taken his killings farther afield than Crystal Lake, venturing into New York city and working in unison with freddy Krueger in an uneasy pact that quickly fell apart. Each time he rises again, the Red Death uses its influence to take on the charade of his mother, goading him with failures and promises to carry out her bidding, The small part of Jason's mind that still functions rememebr his complete devotion to his mother and that he would carry out any act for her. His primitive mental system, or whatever remains of it, unable to see past these charades, making him the perfect killing machine and instrument of spreading fear.

Currently he wanders the site of Crystal Lake and the remnants of the camp that was once there seeking out new victims. The Red Death occasionally uses him to venture further afield and seek out key victims or to act as a seemingly aimless being bent on killing at random. However, the Red Death has a pattern in all the killings Jason inflicts, the grand design far beyond mortal reckoning.

Sadako Yamamura
Ghost - Lawful Evil

Sadako was born on Izu Oshima island in the early 1960's to an unmarried woman who was also a leading medium and psychic. Her father was unknown, the place on her birth certificate left blank. Sadako was a hermaphrodite, but with the name give, it was decided early on that Sadako would be raised as a woman. Sadako was a quiet, often shy child, something that stayed true throughout her natural life.

Sadako spent most of her life on Izu Oshima island until her mother was taken sick and later committed suicide. Still a child, Sadako was taken into foster care and had several homes before she was eventually taken in by a Dr. Heihachiro Ikuma, who was researching the paranormal and who had worked closely with her mother.

After graduating from high school, Sadako received a strange portent of the fiture, that she would give birth in a years time, something she knew to be medically impossible. She then travelled to Tokyo and joined a drama group, hoping to start of a career in acting, something she had hoped for much of her young life. Several months after joining, tragedies were abound within the troupe and she was forced to leave, the decision reinforced by the ailing health of her adopted father Dr. Heihachiro Ikuma. She travelled back to Izu Oshima to visit him daily, spending much of the day in the gardens within the hospital grounds. On one of these days, she was attacked and raped by a student doctor at the hospital. When fearing the discovery of what he had done, he bludgeoned her and cast her into a well before sealing it. t turned out later that the doctor was the last known Small pox sufferer in Japan, but in fact there was anotherm during his rape of Sadako, she had become infected with the same terrible illness and died a slow, horrible death in the darkness below the earth.

Some years later, a group of 4 high school students staying at a cabin resort in the Izu Peninsula region. They recorded a movie while watching another channel and when they went to view it, they were faced with a 20 minute recording of something very bizarre. At the end, a simple warning came up on screen "You will die in 7 days unless you follow these instructions to the letter..." Feeling comedic, they recorded over the remained of the escape clause to the curse.

7 days later, exactly to the moment, they all died in terrible agony.

Sadako's anger was not all that carried her on her her spirit to defy death, the Red Death heard her please and answered her in the darkness. Those who watch the psychic projection that became her video must copy the video tape and show it to another within 7 days. Men who watch the video tape will develop a fast acting case of Small pox and die in an short period of time, possibly in the space of a few minutes, women who watch the tape become inpregnated with Sadako as she wishes to be reborn and repopulate the earth with herself.

Harry Dresden
Adept 10 / Sleuth 3

Harry Dresden is the only wizard in Chicago with an ad in the Yellow Pages. Most of his business comes from acting as a consultant to the CPD Special Investigations Division. Over the years, he has faced werewolves, vampires, ghosts, demons, necromancers and various other monsters.
Harry's defining characteristics are a strong sense of responsibility and an even stronger streak of bad luck.
