Mystic from specific religious backgrounds

Post by Blake_Alexander »

I was wondering if anyone uses specific religious backgrounds in their campaigns for their Mystics (For instance, if a character states that they are from, let's say, a Hindu background, do you work up anything on the spiritual forces that they are interacting with? Such as, which spiritual forces interact with which domains). I've been playing with the idea a little lately and I through I'd approach the subject here.

Since I have someone playing a character from a Roman Catholic background who will be taking a level in Spiritualist, I've worked up a list of Patron Saints who are devoted to aspects that correspond with the Mystic Domains. The PCs will be studying form the notes of a Mystic (A Sister of the Holy Cross) who foretold the PCs coming in her prophecies (gained from divinations).

All - St Mary
Air - St. Joseph of Cupertino
Animal - St. Vitus
Chaos - St. Dymphna
Charm - St. John Chrysoston
Creation - St Rita of Cascia
Death - St. Margaret
Destruction - N/A
Divination - St. Joan of Arc
Earth - St Bernard of Montioux
Evil - N/A
Fire - St. Agatha
Good - Gabriel the Archangel
Guardian - St. Genevieve
Healing - St. Luke
Knowledge - St. Catherine of Alexandria/St Thomas Acquinas
Law - St. John of Capistrano
Magic - ?
Necromancy - N/A
Plant - St. Isidore
Protection - St. Sebastian
Strength - St. George
Summoning - St Francis of Assisi
Sun - St Dominic
War - St Michael the Archangel
Water - St Florian
Weather - Raphael the Archangel

Neat list Blake.

For the magic domain, was there not some sort of saint called "Simon the Magus" (I only picked this up from that movie, The Saint,).

As for destruction sphere, the Old Testament God could always pick that up.

For the necromancy domain you could use the Voodan religion.
Information seems to come my way whether by chance or by fate, but all this means, is that I have yet to find out what will kill me and why. - The Stygian Inquirer

For Magic I recommend Saint Thomas Aquinas. Didn't he write some sort of Libram of magic seals and stuff?

Voudoun is complex enough that you could make a similar list for the Loas.

Voudoun as a whole would be an exceptionally poor choice for Necromancy.

Now, a servant of Baron Samedi... that would work.

Personally, I would have given the Animal domain to St. Francis of Assisi, after all, he was always very kind to animals.
Home is behind,
The world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread,
Through shadow,
To the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.

Mist and shadow,
Cloud and shade,
Hope shall fail,
All shall fade.

I actually considered that, but chose St. Vitus because it falls inside the element that he is Patron over, and moved St. Francis of Assisi to Summoning since it also seems to deal with Animals Primarily. I could have easily gone the other way and put Vitus over Summoning and St. Fransis of Assisi as Animals.
