Rule question for Dungeons and Dragons!

Post by Solan »

I pretty much stopped collecting D&D when it went to third edition, so I don't know what might have happened beyond that. As of 2nd Edition, though, they never bothered to give any rules for what happens when someone loses a limb, say to a sword of sharpness. Do they have to make a Systems check to survive the shock? How much hit points do they lose a round until someone tries to stop the massive blood loss? Was this ever addressed in succeeding editions?

With regard to surviving the injury, I would apply the rules regarding massive injury.

In 2nd, 3rd and 5th edition, variant/optional rules were introduced for what happens after a character injures/loses a limb.

(Re 4th; I do not own any material from that edition so I cannot say for sure if they exist or not)

The rules for injuring limbs can be found in each respective edition's DMG.

DMG AD&D 2E, Specific Injuries
DMG D&D 3.5, Variant: Damage to Specific Areas
DMG D&D 5E, Combat Options: Injuries

I would not require a system shock to be honest. However, I would (in 2e) demand 1d4 (Arm) to 1d6 (leg) damage per round to blood loss. In further editions the damage would be more.
