It's usually harmless but it might bite if grabbed.
She's heard they play dead sometimes.

Re: Curse of the Witch-King OOC
The ponies and mule are domestic animals and you can use Handle Animal untrained to calm them. DC 10 if anyone wants to try.
Between PC alertness and the reaction of the ponies, this isn't a surprise round situation.
Rather, an encounter at unusually close distance.
I haven't rolled initiative because the huge bear has not attacked. Not yet, anyway.
Actions?

I suspect this won't work (or worse, it could backfire), but Klokulf will attempt to affect the bear with cause fear. The Will save DC is 13, assuming the bear has 5 or fewer HD (which I am not confident of).

Okay, Alain does his sneaky stuff, no problem. K-Dawg casts his spell.
Kat?
While Kintire decides...
Huge bear is annoyed by the cause fear spell.
It decides Klokulf looks like supper.
Move and attack, with reach!

Re: Curse of the Witch-King OOC
Alain has cast his spell undetected by anybody, including the bear. He can maneuver for sneak attack at the top of next round if he does a double move this round, and not pass within the bear's reach to risk getting hit by an opportunity attack.

Re: Curse of the Witch-King OOC
Bear has improve grab. Adjudicating all that now...
The bear can start a grapple with a standard claw attack, still doing damage, with the initiation of grapple as a free action that provokes no AoO.Of course, this is what's happening.
Skips straight to step 3.
opposed grapple checks

Klokulf takes another 0 plus 8
16 plus 14 =30
He's not down but now he's in real danger.
