It's more of a "is it 500 ft or a mile?" type of question.

Not a fireball or lightning bolt, he thinks, but something smaller. If it's magic, maybe burning hands.
It could have been a lantern hurled against something flammable.

Except that brief fiery flash to the northeast, likely near the road, nobody in camp actually sees any sign of trouble, just the empty road, the prairie grass, low hills, etc under the moon and stars.
You hear the sounds of a battle or skirmish.

The event seems to be occurring not too far away--a mile at most, you'd guess.

If somebody climbs a low hill or one of the trees in the copse, he might see more.

Or goes down the road toward the noises...

Clive goes to check to it out.

Mounted or on foot?
Armored or with armor 'stored'?

Bringing a light or just relying on the moon and stars (it is a pretty clear night).

on foot with armor stored. He will bring a sun rod to snap in hand just case he needs it.

Sounds cool. I will update soon. I want to give LordSkybolt a chance to see the posts and decide if his PC is coming along on the recon or remaining on watch.

Raen casts mage armor and light. Then shouts to get attention of any survivor that may need help (while planning to dive behind the armored fighter if arrows come out of the night to greet his shouts)

SIR CLIVE AND RAEN

THE NIGHT RAIDERS

Sir Clive has improved initiative.

ORDER OF ACTIONS:

RAIDERS

SIR CLIVE

RAEN

Round 1

half the raiders use a full round action to charge downhill (slopes are too low and gentle to count as difficult terrain) attacking the knight and mage.

the other half use double move actions to cut across the road and get behind/in flanking positions

Raen has mage armor up, but that was a pretty good roll and with a bonus.

10 points of damage to the wizard unless I've missed something and his AC is better than 20.

I know RocEter's guy will counterattack, so I will speed things along by rolling for him now. The player should feel perfectly free to call for edits or shift tactics as he sees fit. It's his dude.

Raen's action is clear enough--move out of melee if possible. Put the knight between him and his enemies

Drops him.

That lets Raen scurry to the relative safety of the knight's rear.

ROUND TWO

Three Night Raiders attack Sir Clive, two of the three moving to flank.

The other pair switch to short spears and cast these at Raen, who isn't in melee but is very near it.
