Outsiders in Ravenloft

Post by KingCorn »

Fiends and Celestials have been proven to cause a twisting/reailty wrinkle. Does this extend to all beings of the outplanes if they enter Ravenloft. We've seen that beings from the Inner Planes like elementals can be twisted by the Land of Mists into Blood, Grave, Mist, and Pyre, so what would happen if a Slaad or a Modron entered the Mists?

Going by memory .... Reality wrinkles require an outsider with the evil subtype. The twisting that accompanies Isolde is a product of an outsider with the good subtype interacting negatively with the stuff of the Land of the Mists. While I don't believe that by canon there is anything for the the law and chaos subtypes, check out the Boreas (the Bad Wind) in Children of the Night: Demons. [http://www.kargatane.com/sotk/netbook/cotndpdf.zip]

"Although it is not truly a fiend, and therefore has
no reality wrinkle, Boreas does carry a great power
wherever it goes: the aura of chaos. This field of
chaotic energy causes all manner of strange
phenomena, particularly alignment and mood shifts in
intelligent creatures. It also creates improbable events
that promote chaos, such as bizarre accidents." (p. 23.)

Mangrum's monster file also has extra twists with a Corrupted Elemental template. Perhaps that could be of use. [http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/Libr ... rs_JWM.zip]

From Children of the Night: Demons (3.0ed or 3.5ed?):

"The pure evil of a demon (or pure good, in the case
of the rare angel trapped in Ravenloft) is powerful
enough to warp reality around the demon, effectively
allowing it to create its own mobile pocket domain." (p. 4.)

-

Ravenloft Champion Setting (3.0ed):

"Perfect Self: If the monk has a good or evil
moral alignment, she develops a reality wrinkle
with an initial radius of 1,000 feet per level." (p. 40.)

"The very presence of fiends has a warping
effect on their surroundings. This warping is called
a reality wrinkle. The sheer, undiluted evil of the
fiend reacts with the Mists and creates what is
essentially a mobile pocket domain centered on
the fiend." (p. 197.)

Mistipedia

"A reality wrinkle is the zone of planar disruption surrounding an outsider with the Good or Evil descriptor. The moral purity, in either extreme, of the outsider reacts to the planar fabric of the demiplane and creates a region similar to that of a small domain that moves with the creature. Within the wrinkle, a darklord's power over his or her own domain is usurped, including the ability to close the domain's border. A darklord is aware immediately of such a disruption of his or her domain.

The effects of the reality wrinkles created by Good and Evil outsiders differ. Evil outsiders' (fiends) reality wrinkles disrupt a darklord's control and immunity to powers checks. The reality wrinkles of Good outsiders (celestials) also disrupt the fabric of reality in Ravenloft, causing native inert materials to turn ghastly in appearance before fading back into the Mists. They also prevent natural healing in living creatures, though magical healing still works. A celestial can suppress their reality wrinkle as a free action.

Fiends can also perform power rituals to gain land-based powers at a cost. The ritual can only be performed once per domain regardless of success or failure, their reality wrinkle is immediately halved, and they gain corruption points that cause a percentage chance of future power rituals failing as well as an equal chance that any effect that would allow escape from the demiplane will fail. When a fiend has enough corruption points (21+) they lose their reality wrinkle, all power rituals automatically fail as well as any effect that could let them escape, and they become susceptible to powers checks as mortals are. Such is the cost of tying themselves to the land. Fiends automatically know how to perform power rituals.

Celestials gain no benefit from power rituals and still gain corruption points. They are also not immune to powers checks and any failed powers check instead adds to their corruption points until they lose their reality wrinkle completely. Like fiends, a celestial whose corruption points reach higher than 21 can never escape Ravenloft and is now affected by failed powers checks as mortals are.
Steve Miller

"And for what it's worth, if I had it to do over again, the reality wrinkles would either be smaller or they would be more clearly spelled out. As Ropie said, they weren't intended to be some sort of cheezy safe zone. And those who said they give way [to the approach of a darklord] were absolutely right. They have to." -Steve Miller"

FAQ
"How do reality wrinkles work?

Reality wrinkles act as a miniature domain that covers and overlaps the existing land. An outsider with a reality wrinkle can walk right up to a darklord without confusion (as long as the lord permits them). On this often misunderstood ability, we will let Azalin from the lost ‘Ask Azalin’ forum make his summary for us:

“An outsider receives a reality wrinkle if it has either the Good or the Evil descriptor and it does not have the Mists descriptor. An outsider loses its reality wrinkle if it "maxes out" its Corruption points (22+) or binds itself to a mortal (as in the case of outsider familiars). Once an outsider loses its reality wrinkle, it can fail powers checks and even become a darklord just like anyone else. (Mists outsiders are an exception; they never make powers check because they are simply a malign extension of Ravenloft's planar fabric.)

"A mortal who uses magic or special abilities (aka, "mortal magic") to temporarily change his creature type to "outsider" does not gain a reality wrinkle. A mortal who permanently becomes an outsider as a class ability (such as a 20th-level monk) is considered to have "ascended" to true outsider status. Such a character gains any applicable alignment descriptors (Chaotic, Evil, Good, Lawful) and, if the ascended outsider gains either the Good or Evil descriptors, then the character does gain a reality wrinkle, just like a monk. The character is considered an outsider in all ways.

"Evil outsiders (fiends) can perform power rituals and thus gain land-based powers. Good outsiders (celestials) can also perform power rituals, but they cannot gain land-based powers; all they accomplish is to reduce the size of their reality wrinkle. And yes, in the previous two paragraphs I am referring specifically to the alignment descriptors.” [http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/FAQs.html]

Got a canon source for this, or is this just an opinion?

As always, Rule 0.

But in this case my way is the same as the rules in the 3e books; only Outsiders with the Good or Evil descriptors have reality wrinkles. Neutrals don't, IMO.

I haven't made much use of fiends and similar creatures in Ravenloft, but a reality wrinkle featured in my campaign here on the forums not too long ago (Ravenloft, the One that Got Away).
