There's actually one episode of the Real Ghostbusters that has an ancestor of Egon Spengler as a witchhunter in colonial America.
RGB also had an episode featuring the Eiffel Tower as a containment unit.
Incidentally, the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eiffel_Tower
In real life, there were certainly quasi-scientific societies being created in the 1880s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_fo ... l_Research

William James was a big supporter of the latter society (according to Wikipedia.) Perhaps a precursor to the Ghostbusters could belong one of these groups (or be on the fringes of even these societies)
