Tarotka Reading: Avram ben Mansur
Presented with commentary, due to Whistler's "oh man sure" response upon my suggestion I do so.

First House: Sense of Self
Nine of Coins
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
A positive card, the Nine of Coins is the card of material success, and the emotional stability that has come from that success. Avram has worked hard, it's paid off, his family and people have what they need, who could ask for anything more? This is a card of comfort and happiness, a relative wealthiness, even if by comparison the person bearing it isn't wealthy at all.

Second House: Material Goods, Money, Possessions
Two of Swords
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Two of Swords is the card of a stalemate and a deadlock. Avram's finances aren't getting worse, but something is preventing them from ever getting better, either. He's soared as high as he can, now something is actively stopping him from going any higher - no doubt the social norms in Hazlan has something to do with this. As a Rashemani, the ruling order is pressing down on him, even as his own efforts try to lift him up.

Third House: Siblings, Neighbors, Close Kin, Surroundings
Ace of Swords
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Ace is the sign of a beginning, an intellectual potential, a thought or idea that lays the foundation for something bigger than itself. It's also a symbol of authority, and it can be a symbol of war. We're presuming this has more to do with his neighbors and surroundings, although his close kin might be highly involved too. There is some new potential for his position of leadership - the fact that it exists does not mean it will bear fruit, but it does exist, and it's an auspicious sign that with hard work, it can flourish. With the hint of revolution in the air, it can be a sign that the changing social order may be a boon to Avram. Compare this with the Two of Swords just above, as well: one sword has been removed, allowing action on the part of the other.

Fourth House: Father, Roots and Foundations, Emotional Needs
Ace of Cups, Inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Wuh oh. This is the symbol of emotion, but since it's inverted, it's not a sign of good emotion. This is the card of being over-emotional. Emotion can make you stupid, or worse yet, make you selfish. It's clear there was some kind of issue with Avram's roots or family that cropped up because of this, and most likely crashed and burned because of this as well.

Fifth House: Self-Expression, in Romance and Creative Endeavors
Eight of Cups
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Once again, we have an interesting pair of cards here. There's the inversed Ace of Cups up above, where over-emotion harmed Avram in the past, and here is the card of walking away from an emotional situation because it's bad for you. In other words, Avram seems to have walked away from self-expression. It is, in theory, a change for the better, though not necessarily a pleasant one. This isn't really a happy card, merely one that can no longer be held in place by its past feelings.

Sixth House: The Mundane Things of Life, Daily Routines, Drudergy, Work
Master of Coins, Inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Master of Coins inverted has authority, but really shouldn’t. He's bad at his job, he's corrupt and greedy, and he's completely inflexible. The court cards, note, tend to have one of three interpretations: they are either a part of the subject's personality, a specific person in their life, or a situation that matches the "personality" of the card. We're going to assume Avram isn't an incompetent scrooge (and if he is, he's not going to admit it), which means this is either the situation around him or a particular thorn in his daily life. Some self-inflated whacko in power is failing to understand that less is more when it comes to oversight... or potentially a LOT of whackos are failing to grasp this, and Avram is continually forced to deal with the corruption and closed-mindedness.

Seventh House: Commitment, as it Relates to Peers and Partners
The Raven
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Raven is a card of faith and hope, a light that shines out through the darkness of life. No matter how bad things may get, who Avram is - and the people he's dedicated himself to - will keep him going. He believes in his commitments, and he does not falter or lose his way, because he will always have them to guide him.

Eighth House: The Property of Others (To Which We Interpret to Mean the Rest of Hazlan)
Seven of Coins
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
This is the card of disappointment and reassessment after reaping the fruits of your labor. It doesn't necessarily represent that the work done up to this point was a bad decision, or even a wrong one, but it may not have been what you expected or thought you wanted. In other words, this is Avram's time to reassess if Hazlan was the right choice for him. He may yet decide that it was, but things remain that leave doubts in his mind, which need to be considered and addressed.

Ninth House: Philosophy, Spiritualism
Mistress of Cups, Inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Interestingly enough, this is another card that signifies "too much emotion": the Mistress of Cups inverted is ruled by her feelings, which makes her easily-swayed and unreliable. Once again, court cards tend to have one of three interpretations: they are either a part of the subject's personality, a specific person in their life, or a situation that matches the "personality" of the card. Unlike the Master of Coins, it's harder to rule out one of the options above. We see Avram having the inverted Ace of Cups in regards to his roots and foundations, so the two cards may be connected. This may also be a specific person in Avram's religious life, who is causing him issue.

Dan's take: If the overemotionalism is in comparison to an established norm, then yes it fits.

Tenth House: Career and Ambition, Those of Superior Status
Three of Stars
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
This is the card of cooperation and enterprise, joining efforts to accomplish higher goals. This is kind of funny, considering Avram has the card of idiots in authority back up above. That being said, there's a lot of authority over him when it comes to Mulani, so one doesn't necessarily contradict the other. We know he, supposedly, has a good relationship with his lord Nezar Isfahani, at least.

Dan's take: Nonetheless, he's joining with those of superior status to get something important done. Like, right now. :P In the thread.

Eleventh House: Social Life, Friends, Clubs, Social Circles
Squire of Cups, Inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
I'll note now Avram has a lot of cups cards, and most of them are inverted (if one wants to get really meta, it's three inverted to two upright, the same number of spilled-to-upright cups as is on the Five of Cups, the card of grief). This sort of signifies some issues with emotions in both past and present, and possibly future. The inverted Squire of Cups is something like a troubled child: overemotional, easily upset, moody and acting out in socially unacceptable ways. They are overwhelmed by feeling and aren't mature enough to deal with it - their outbursts aren't malicious in nature, but that doesn't make them any less troublesome. So either Avram's relationship with his friends is rather petulant, or there's a specific friend that this card represents.

Dan's take: OH. Actually yes this is a specific person.

Twelfth House: The Subconscious
Two of Cups
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
This is the card of love, a strong bond between two people based in their emotional compatibility and mutual interest. Maybe it’s not a romantic love, but it’s definitely two people who draw strength from one another, and rejuvenate one another. And really, what more needs to be said?

Thirteenth House: Overarching Theme
Ten of Coins (inverted)
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Ten of Coins is the card of legacy, of passing what was gained by one generation down to the next - but it is inverted, and so this inheritance has somehow gone wrong. The "legacy" turned out to be more of a curse, the receiving generation didn't really want it, or maybe the person passing it down wasn't even sure if they wanted to give it. This is the mistakes of the past weighing down the present, something that can't be easily cast aside but has long ago turned sour.

Tarotka Reading: Søren Thott
Drawn by Nathan, presented with commentary

First House: Sense of Self
Master of Swords
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
An unsurprisingly confident view of himself. The Master of Swords is the Master of the mind, someone who is ruled by his intellect and rules with his intellect. He's completely rational, and his rulings are always just, because they spring from logic. Conversely, his emotions hold little sway on him. The Master of Swords usually represents someone in authority - swords can represent legitimate authority, both stemming from man and from divine providence.

Second House: Material Goods, Money, Possessions
Moon, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Aaaand right into the negative. Something about Søren's material status has a current of deception running beneath it. We don't know much about Søren's material status to try and guess at what that means. Of course, the point of the inverted Moon is that he might not know what it means either. Maybe he's richer than he looks, maybe he's poorer, maybe he's one or the other but does not realize it. The inverted Moon is a card of befuddled senses - you can't believe what you see, or maybe you're just fooling yourself into thinking that. It's also the card of lunacy, acting without rationale or reason. Søren's opinion of himself as the master of reason may not apply to his financial affairs.

Third House: Siblings, Neighbors, Close Kin, Surroundings
Ten of Coins
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Ten of Coins is that of inheritance and legacy. Søren, we know, is heir apparent to the house of Thott. Of course, this is the slot of close kin, and we have Yarek over there, who is his cousin and IS the head of the house. Simple, right? Only the fact this card showed up means this is pretty important to Søren's state of mind. Now, it could be something positive, like him wanting to work with his cousin to build up his house's legacy. Or it could be negative. I mean, he's probably never going to actually inherit the house, with Yarek younger than him.

Let's not jump to conclusions. It's probably positive.

Fourth House: Father, Roots and Foundations, Emotional Needs
Five of Stars
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Five of Stars is that of positive conflict - which seems like an oxymoron, but it's meant to represent growth via struggle. Søren needs to be challenged to be satisfied emotionally; leaving him idle makes him start to act out. We don't know anything about his father, so no guesses there. He might enjoy struggling with his house and pushing boundaries, but once again, not enough information to tell.

Fifth House: Self-Expression, in Romance and Creative Endeavors
Two of Swords
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Two of Swords is the card of a stalemate. Søren has two opposing forces in his mind, and neither one is able to overpower the other. The result of this means that everything in this category - his expression, creativity, and romantic affairs - is blocked. He can't act on any of them until he manages to overcome one of the dueling impulses in his mind, but so far it doesn't look like either of them is going to budge.

Sixth House: The Mundane Things of Life, Daily Routines, Drudergy, Work
Knight of Cups, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The personality cards of the tarotka deck can be summed up as either a person, a facet of Søren's himself, or a situation that matches the 'personality' of the card. When inverted, the Knight of Cups is a card that is a slave to his emotions, overly enthusiastic and yet entirely superficial. He's moody, he's oversensitive, and he's flighty and insincere, even if he himself does not realize it. Søren's mundane affairs are represented by a bit of a drama queen. Either the people he deals with are completely irrational and huffy, or he himself cannot really be depended upon for day to day affairs - he'll drop them if something more exciting comes along, and then use his natural charm to wiggle out of the consequences.

Judging from the Five of Stars up above, I'm guessing this means he's a flake when he's bored. Love em and leave em.

Seventh House: Commitment, as it Relates to Peers and Partners
Mistress of Cups, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Here's another card of flightiness and emotional superficiality. The Queen of Cups, when inverted, is another card ruled by her emotions - she's not as active in this as the Knight, but it does make her easily swayed. She usually sees what she wants to see, rather than what's actually realistic, or what anyone else is trying to tell her. She's friendly and charming, but overall completely shallow. She can't be relied upon, to put it mildly. Don't ask Søren to take care of your goldfish while you're on vacation.

Eighth House: The Property of Others (To Which We Interpret to Mean the Rest of Hazlan)
Five of Cups, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Five of Cups is a sign of sorrow, inverted it's a sign of putting that behind you and recovering. Somewhere in the past, something about Hazlan caused Søren some grief. But he's getting over it now.

Hazlan is kind of a big concept, although the original house of this card does have to deal with property. The property of others, even. Maybe even the property of the Thott. Though if that be the case, it would point to his relationship with his cousin being positive. After all, this does represent getting over it.

Ninth House: Philosophy, Spiritualism
Four of Cups, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Inverted, the Four of Cups is a rejuvenated interest in something. Søren was so done with spirituality and philosophy, but now something has seriously rekindled his interest. He's super into it now. So, looking at the card above, we can sort of piece together Søren has not been thrilled with how Hazlan works in the past, but now he's very, very pleased about it. Interesting.

Tenth House: Career and Ambition, Those of Superior Status
The Mists, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Oofa. If any card represents Ravenloft as a whole - which is to say, the awful bits of Ravenloft where the world is filled with dark things and damnation of your own forging - it's the Mists inverted. This is a bad card to have in this particular slot. Søren's ambitions and their outcomes are shrouded in mystery, and no one can say how they'll wind up turning out... but it's not going to be good. Søren is quite clearly marked out to be in a Ravenloft story. Achieving his goals isn't going to turn out how he wanted it to.

I mean, or this could refer to "those of superior status", in which case he might catch the attention of a Darklord. Or the Dark Powers. Either way, have fun with that, Søren.

Eleventh House: Social Life, Friends, Clubs, Social Circles
Mistress of Coins, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The inverse Mistress of Coins is... well, let's be frank, it's Lady Macbeth. She's ruthless, she knows what she wants, and she will darn well trample everyone and everything in her way to get it. People only exist in terms of their worth to her, and she'll sell them out if she thinks it'll profit her. So either Søren needs to get some new friends, or Søren himself is a very very bad friend.

I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself
And falls on the other.

(Wrong Macbeth, but still.)

Twelfth House: The Subconscious
Six of Coins, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
This is the card of giving and taking, but without any balance - one of the parties here is clearly the dominant party. Anything given has strings attached, and will be paid back on the dominant party's terms. Refusing said gift is likely not an option. This is on Søren's mind, although it's not clear if he's the dominant party or the receiving one. Whatever is being given, or taken, is really no help at all, and there's no generosity to be found anywhere in here.

Thirteenth House: Overarching Theme
Strength, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Søren may have the soul of a hellhound, but on this card, the hound is biting back. Strength is the card of using fortitude and patience to conquer - inverted, it means Søren has worn himself out struggling violently against something that's bigger than he is. It might be internal or external, but either way, he's is no better off for all his efforts. He's still faced with exactly the same obstacle, only now he's expended too much energy futilely trying to fight it. The only way to get what he wants is to be patient and hold firm, not backing down but not trying to shove forward. Otherwise he's going to be broken by his own struggles, and devoured by something that's a better beast than him.
"No, but evil is still being — Is having reason — Being reasonable! Mousie understands? Is always being reason. Is punishing world for not being... Like in head. Is always reason. World should be different, is reason."

Tarotka Reading: Yarek Thott
Drawn by Nathan, presented with commentary

First House: Sense of Self
The Traitor, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Have I mentioned how much I hate inversions?

The Traitor is a card that's clear upright, but could mean many different things when it is inverted. Upright, it represents sacrifice and acceptance, a card of spiritual limbo. Inverted, it's a sign of struggle and action, but the details of that action aren't clear. At its most positive, it means that a time of reflection has come to an end. At it's most negative, it's a sign of refusing to self-reflect, or being trapped in a self-destructive course of action that you don't agree with but still feel obligated to do.

Second House: Material Goods, Money, Possessions
Ace of Coins, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Ace of Coins is the sign of a financial beginning; inverted, it's still a sign of financial opportunities, but they're either mismanaged or sour. Yarek looks like he has good prospects for wealth in life, but there's something wrong about all of them. There might be nasty strings attached, or they might have all been squandered or misappropriated. His financial status, despite all he has going for him, is shaky - the effort he's putting into it is being wasted, either through his own fault or the constant sabotage, intentional or unintentional, by others.

Third House: Siblings, Neighbors, Close Kin, Surroundings
Ace of Swords, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Ace of Swords is a sign of intellect, but also a sign of authority - given his status as head of the house, that seems like the most likely interpretation to be drawn. Inversed, this card is a sign of bad authority: Tyranny, Conflict, Instability, Stress, Usurping the Divine Order of Things (which means the divine right of rulers, in this case). There is a fault in his rule, be it his own failings or the desires of others around him to undermine him. Like the other Aces, this is a sign of beginnings, but unfortunately, bad beginnings. Yarek is a young man, how long has he been in power over the Thott?

Fourth House: Father, Roots and Foundations, Emotional Needs
Six of Coins, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Six of Coins inversed again. This is the card of giving and taking... with strings attached, and no true charity. Since this is in the house of his roots and foundations, it probably refers to his hereditary title. He's been given a lot in life, and everything he'd been given has come with obligations, jealousy, responsibility, and threats. If we look at the cards around this, we start to make out a general trend in Yarek's life - someone who has been given a great deal, and now is expected to pay it back, whether or not he wanted it in the first place. It's taking a toll on Yarek emotionally, everything he's been given has only served to make him trapped in a bad situation.

Søren had this card in the house of his subconscious. Maybe he's worried for his cousin? That would be nice.

Fifth House: Self-Expression, in Romance and Creative Endeavors
Absolution, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The card of Absolution is that of second chances and having the slate wiped clean from the past. Inverted, the chance is there, but something about Yarek simply prevents him from taking it. He wants to be able to be free, to express himself as a person, to not be bogged down by the role that's been shufted onto him. But he's too afraid to hope, too unable to believe it will work out, too skeptical that anything will really change. He can't get beyond his past, and it's sinking his future - he'll probably regret it later.

Sixth House: The Mundane Things of Life, Daily Routines, Drudergy, Work
Eight of Swords
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Eight of Swords is the card of imprisonment and oppression, either by outside forces or mental blocks inside your own head. Once again,we have a picture painted of Yarek trapped within his own responsibilities. The pressures on him are both external and internal, but judging from the other cards, most internal. He feels, in many ways, obligated to keep doing what he's doing, even though he hates it completely.

Seventh House: Commitment, as it Relates to Peers and Partners
Master of Coins
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Finally a bit of positivity, and yet it's entirely in how Yarek treats others. The Master of Coins is a pillar of material stability, someone with wealth and good advice to spare. This is a man of means, and can often represent someone in a financial position. He's mature, which means his advice is solid, although he can be trapped by Orthodox ways of thinking. So despite being stuck in a terrible financial situation (see above), he still keeps his responsibilities reliably - he doesn't take unnecessary risks or gambles, and doesn't let people down.

Eighth House: The Property of Others (To Which We Interpret to Mean the Rest of Hazlan)
Knight of Coins
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Knight of Coins is slow, steady, and reliable. He's not the most exciting and dynamic person, but he can be depended upon. He's responsible. His energy is devoted to doing what he perceives to be his duty. He's the one sitting at home keeping things running while everyone else is having fun. We could take this to refer to Yarek again, as per the card directly above. If we want to hope there's at least something nice in Yarek's life, we can say that Hazlan is treating him responsibly too, reliably being there for him even when no one else is.

Ninth House: Philosophy, Spiritualism
Eight of Cups inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
This is the alcoholic's card, the card of coming crawling back to something over and over again despite the fact that you hate it and hate yourself for coming back to it. Yarek doesn't really like his faith, but he functionally doesn't know what he would do without it. He sticks with it because anything seems better than starting all over from scratch - change is scary, and pulling out a big chunk of yourself leaves you uncertain of who you really are. Also, there's the Inquisition. Let's not forget the Inquisition.

Tenth House: Career and Ambition, Those of Superior Status
Ten of Swords, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Alright, so this card could have one of two meanings.

Either this refers to Yarek's career and ambition, in which case something horrible and terrible has happened with regards to it - possibly his father's death, given how young the man is - but now that the worst has happened, it is literally only uphill from here. So sort of a positive note.

OR this could refer to those of superior status, in which case the card represents removing a tyrant or an evil force. In which case, Yarek may perhaps wish to join the coalition of throwing Hazlik under a bus.

Eleventh House: Social Life, Friends, Clubs, Social Circles
Four of Cups inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
When inverted, the Four of Cups is a sign of rejuvenated interest. Yarek's life may suck all kinds of eggs, but he has some awesome friends. Yipee!

Twelfth House: The Subconscious
Ace of Stars
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
Despite all the cards up above signifying how trapped and crushed by responsibility he is, how all of his situations are bad and how all omens are pointed against him, Yarek has the Ace of Stars in his thoughts. The Ace of Stars is a bolt of energy, and impulse, an inspiration - a sudden desire and will to act. Yarek has been seized by the desire to do something, though what it is, we do not know. It's not a sign of success in his new endeavor, but it is a promising start.

Thirteenth House: Overarching Theme
Moon, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Moon inversed is a sign of confusion, illusion, and lunacy, being unable to trust anyone or anything, even yourself. It could be fair to say that Yarek is wrapped up in a situation he cannot understand, and has no way of being certain what is right. This is the card of his overarching theme, however - to simply say he is embroiled in deception would likely have fit better into one of the other houses. It might be more accurate to say that Yarek himself is deceptive and illusive. His role in the story and events to come cannot be nailed down, and trying to do so may only end in self-delusion. Whatever Yarek holds, in his future or in his present, it isn't what it appears on the surface. Or maybe it is, and you're looking too far into it.

Which kind of invalidates his whole reading. All the cards up above may mean something completely different than how they're interpreted.

Isn't it kinda funny how Søren's material wealth card is The Moon inverted?

Tarotka Reading: Helja yf-Thott Fangtor
Drawn by Nathan, presented with commentary

First House: Sense of Self
Squire of Stars
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Squire of Stars is someone concerned with the practical side of life, but still has the energy and curiosity of youth. Her understanding of life is incomplete, but that only increases her appreciation and joie de vivre. She is a free spirit, outspoken and direct in her actions. She demands some manner of action in her life, usually dragging excitement and change along for the ride. Her ambitions are high but not unattainable – she will challenge herself, but it’s unlikely she'll overstep her limits unless pushed. This is someone with an innovative bent to her, learning all she can and applying it to problems she encounters along the way.

Second House: Material Goods, Money, Possessions
The High Priestess
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The High Priestess is a sign of the power of the unconscious, the hidden mysteries of the mind. So... it's not really a card about material things, and yet here it is, in the house of possessions. It's a sign of intuition and a clue to look beneath the surface - there's more to Helja's material standing than simply meets the eye.

Third House: Siblings, Neighbors, Close Kin, Surroundings
Three of Stars
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Three of Stars is a card of industry, banding together to accomplish more than any single person can do together. Helja works well with the people around her, and together they're very productive. This in turn offers security, as a group of people can pick up the slack of any one of them falters.

Fourth House: Father, Roots and Foundations, Emotional Needs
Ten of Swords, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Ten of Swords inversed can have one of two meanings. Something completely catastrophic might have happened in Helja's past relating to her roots or emotional needs - something she is now recovering from, because the worst has already happened, and it's only up from here. Or, some tyrannical authority figure was removed from troubling her... possibly violently.

Yarek has this card in his Career and those of Superior Status house. At the time I interpreted it straight, but it could be referencing the same event as Helja's here... or not. It's something to keep an eye on, however, given how close the three querants are in these readings.

Fifth House: Self-Expression, in Romance and Creative Endeavors
Nine of Swords, inverted
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Nine of Swords inverted is sunshine after the storm. Helja's self-expression had been filled with pain in the past, mental pain that caused a great deal of trouble - but it's better now. The clouds have parted, and she can act without suffering under her own thoughts.

Of course, that inverted Hazlik is always a telling guy, but I'm gonna assume he's not applying in this specific case - unless Helja enjoys writing poetry about throwing Hazlik under a bus.

Sixth House: The Mundane Things of Life, Daily Routines, Drudergy, Work
Seven of Coins
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Seven of Cups is a card of assessment. It's hard work paying off, but the worker being uncertain if the effort was worth it, and taking the time to consider if this path is worth continuing down. It may indeed turn out to be so, but there is uncertainty, and that needs to be squared away. Helja seems to work very well with the people around her, but she's uncertain if this is what she wants to be doing. She is considering if she's merely suffering from fatigue, or is genuinely unhappy with her situation.

Seventh House: Commitment, as it Relates to Peers and Partners
Six of Cups
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Six of Cups is a card of simple pleasures, almost childlike in it's nature. Her current peer group is a pleasure to interact with, in a quiet sort of way.

If we combine this with the Seven of Coins and the Squire of Stars up above, it may be possible Helja's uncertainty comes from not being currently challenged. She sees herself as a dynamic, inventive soul, but may not have much of an outlet for that in her current role - while she is happy here, there is a sense of dissatisfaction that comes from feeling like she's not personally accomplishing what she could.

Eighth House: The Property of Others (To Which We Interpret to Mean the Rest of Hazlan)
Four of Coins, inverted

This is the miser without the money, someone locked in stasis desperately trying to keep the money and status they lost a long time ago. If we apply this to the rest of Hazlan, it paints a picture of a bunch of petty rulers playing at being important, failing to see they're no longer relevant in any grand scheme of things - and watching everything they once had crumble around them.

Ninth House: Philosophy, Spiritualism
Master of Swords

The Master of Swords is the ultimate sign of rationality - someone who is ruled by logic, and whose morality stems from logic. Any spiritualism that Helja follows comes because she has decided it is the correct path to take, not because it offers her anything emotionally.

Tenth House: Career and Ambition, Those of Superior Status
Nine of Cups

Whatever Helja wants, Helja gets. The nickname of this card is the "make a wish" card, as it is a sign of perfect happiness, contentment, and success – in other words, it’s a sign that wherever it crops up, you’re going to get exactly what you want. So, whatever Helja's ambitions are, they're going to come true, and it's not going to have a nasty twist on it that makes her wish she'd never gotten what she wanted.

Unless her ambition is simply to be emotionally content. Could be!

Eleventh House: Social Life, Friends, Clubs, Social Circles
Six of Coins, inverted

Image
There's the inverse Six of Coins again. It means the same thing as up above - generosity without balance, charity with strings attached, one person dominating the relationship. Helja's social circles are either a drain, or give things that can't be refused and then demand payback.

However, seriously, all three of the Thotts have this card: Helja here, Yarek in his Roots and Foundations, and Søren in the subconscious. To have all three of them share the same card could easily suggest it is all referring to the same thing, somehow: it's Yarek's family, Helja's social circles, and weighing on Søren's mind.

Twelfth House: The Subconscious
Eight of Cups
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
The Eight of Cups is an emotional retreat, leaving something pleasant (or perhaps no longer pleasant) behind because, in the long run, it's better for you that way. Helja's subconscious has realized she needs to draw the curtain on something and move on, even if her mind hasn't yet realized it yet. We can see she'd having some doubts up above, though what she needs to put an end to could be any number of things, ranging from a relationship to her own desires and ambitons.

Thirteenth House: Overarching Theme
Four of Stars
VIEW CONTENT:
Image
This is sometimes called “perfected work” or “completion”. The Four of Stars represents having put in the effort, forming bonds over it, and now enjoying the success and stability from that. This is the sign of a strong homestead, and the celebrations that naturally spring from a happy group of people. Helja has worked hard, and despite any doubts she might have, she is enjoying the payoff of those efforts.

Re: Hazlan, Land of Monsters: PC and NPC Miscellanea

-----------------------------------------------

Ever since Cyrus and Darius had spoken on Hazlani astrology, Richard had been dreadfully curious to learn more. He’d always had a strong interest in Hazlani tattoo art, and finding out the meaning behind the patterns intrigued him. His curiosity had mostly had to wait, as there weren’t all that many Hazlani astrologers outside of Hazlan. So one of the first things he had done, once he had settled in and the Thott business had been as untangled as it possibly could be, was pay a visit to a local Astrologer. Of course, he couldn’t do terribly much to learn his totem - for one thing, it didn’t seem like the Hazlani appreciated performing such a service for foreigners, and for another, it would involve having an astrologer following him around all the time and judging all his actions. Richard wasn’t sure he wanted to know, anyway, given how focused everyone seemed to be on the things. But learning solar signs was as simple as translating his birthday into the Hazlani calendar, and didn’t seem to be too big an imposition. After finding his own, he began to ask about other persons of his acquaintance. It all spiralled a bit out of control.

Richard wrote back to his friends. It was like getting them a souvenir, Richard supposed, only instead of a strange cultural artifact it was a bit of knowledge. It might interest them, like it interested him, and writing to them was important.

-------
Nerit Doherty - OPPOSITION GREY WISDOM (November 15th):
SOLAR SIGN: WITCHGRASS
Associated virtues: Wisdom, Diligence. Associated vices: Pride. Witchgrass is generally considered a “low” or “common” sign. As a Grey sign it is associated with Venus, air, and water, as well as with divinity, death, and birth. As a solar sign it generally points to a life whose contributions will be “often seen and seldom noticed”.

Richard frowned, mildly, as he put the pen to paper on this. He rather suspected the “witch” in witchgrass was the more accurate bit, rather than any theorizing about life accomplishments - and he really did not know what Sister Doherty would think of it. She would no doubt have some manner of comment on it, of that Richard would be sure. How many meanings that comment would have, he was not sure, and would likely remain unsure long after she’d made it. Still, he counted her as a friend, and so he wrote to her of it. Perhaps it would amuse her, and that really was all that Richard could hope for.

Kerrian Mauganson - JUSTICE WHITE COURAGE (February 10th):
Symbol: THUNDERBIRD
Associated virtues: Zeal, Courage. Associated vices: Pride, Envy. The Thunderbird is an Epitome, and one of the most powerful signs of the Hazlani Zodiac. As a White sign it is associated with the sun, fire, and air. As a solar sign it represents rising above one’s native condition, especially in spiritual matters.

Richard had never really understood Kerrian’s strange gift, though he was at least charitable enough to think it was a gift, and not the young man overindulging in hallucinogens. But somehow, the Thunderbird seemed appropriate for the shaman - a man who had the power to shake the heavens. Kerrian had been something of a reluctant medium, but Richard suspected he’d be honored and proud to bear that symbol. And perhaps it boded well for Kerrian’s forays into politics. Cerise would pass it on, to wherever Kerrian happened to be right now.

Cerise Rondelet - TRANSMUTATION RED DILIGENCE (April 15th)
SOLAR SIGN: HYDNORA AFRICANA
Associated virtues: Diligence, Wisdom. Associated Vices: Sloth. Hydnora Africana is ambiguous, but more commonly negative, as a solar sign and negative as a totem. As a Red sign it is associated with Mars, fire, and earth, as well as with the arcane. As a solar sign it is associated with the sudden emergence of life-changing events—for the worse, in most cases.

It really figured that Cerise’s sign was a fleshy, parasitic fungus that looked like a toothy monster more than a plant. Cerise was going to be excited for weeks.

Katja Zweibach - CHAOS RED OBEDIENCE (December 21st)
SOLAR SIGN: CELOSIA
Associated virtues: Obedience, Diligence. Associated vices: Envy, Wrath. Celosia is considered negative as a solar sign and somewhat negative as a totem. As a Red sign it is associated with Mars, fire, and earth, as well as with the arcane. As a solar sign it represents a life dogged by bad luck and troubles from unlikely sources.

That one seemed a little too accurate for Richard’s liking. None of his friends knew for certain what troubles the soldier woman bore, but they’d all had guesses. She’d left, a few years back, stating she had unfinished business to take care of. No one had seen or heard from her since - Richard wrote this to Cerise, instead, in the hopes that someday, someone would find her.

Celeste Viardot - DUALITY WHITE DILIGENCE (January 14th)
SOLAR SIGN: QUAKING ASPEN
Associated virtues: Diligence, Honesty. Associated vices: Envy. The Quaking Aspen is one of the most common signs in western Hazlan and is usually regarded as a positive sign. As a White sign it is associated with the sun, fire, and air. As a solar sign it usually indicates a life of material comfort; it also may point to complacency, especially in spiritual matters.

They were beautiful trees, Quaking Aspen, and somehow the white wood and gold foliage seemed to suit Celeste. Of course, as a solar sign, it mostly stated the obvious. Celeste was indeed very well off. Richard paused to wonder if he ought to include the bit about “complacency”. He did in the end - Celeste was guaranteed to be Completely Thrilled with just about anything he wrote, and had a very strong talent for making the best of things. She’d probably even find a way to make the best of Thierri’s solar sign, though Richard hoped it didn’t involve importing mole rat colonies.

Thierri Viardot - UNION BLACK OBEDIENCE (November 1st)
SOLAR SIGN: NAKED MOLE RAT
Associated virtues: Obedience, Diligence. Associated vices: Gluttony, Envy. The Naked Mole Rat is somewhat negative as both a solar sign and as a totem. As a Black sign it is associated with the moon, earth, and water. As a solar sign it indicates a life of misplaced priorities and devotion to dubious causes.

“Union Black Obedience” certainly seemed an accurate indicator of Thierri’s fate, though not quite in the way the astrologer had intimated. Thierri was devoted to his family, and working as a doctor, which didn’t seem “misplaced”. Of course, Thierri had, at one point, become possessed by a half-mile hurricane of wraiths. That counted if anything did, thought Richard, especially since those wraiths had given Richard a massive heart attack. The naked mole rats even seemed appropriate to this, given their ghastly appearance. Richard mentioned this to the astrologer, who had simply explained that interpreting the intricacies of astrology was a difficult business, especially without a totem to work with.

Given the husband of the pair was a magician, it was no surprise that the Viardots’ response arrived much faster than anyone else’s. Celeste was, as predicted, Completely Thrilled, and now had plans to plant a small grove of quaking aspen on her estate - just as soon as the gardener recovered from his mysterious rake accident. Thierri himself merely commented that astrology, like every manner of prophecy, could be shoehorned to mean any number of things, and was really only really good for kicking yourself after the fact.

Richard had wondered about the signs of his other acquaintances, but he had not been quite so intimate with them as to know their birthdays... and somehow, he did not feel that any astrologer was a match for Devereux, when it came to stars.

A (very lightly) annotated map of Castle Tristenoira, complete with tree and tombs so you can see where those are.

Stop laughing at my Photoshop skills. <_<

A few notes on locations:

You can see the drawbridge over at the far right. That's where you came in.

In the present, only the north tower is still standing. This is where the air elementals got lost/attacked, where the piper who was calling the clans is, and the dungeons where you found Dundee are reach through its basement. Lena, Cattia, Renhalt, Avram and Dundee are there now, meeting with the Lady ApBlanc, on either the second or the third floor (I will have to check the map again to be sure which).

In both previous time periods, there is a south tower which is the twin (on the outside) of the north tower. This tower has collapsed in the present.

You met the Laird and Lady in Castle A. The New Hall, the walls, and the outbuilding have not been built in this time period; the castle consists only of the two towers and the Old Hall.

You met Avard and the young creepy Colin (and Morholt, for that matter) in Castle B. Almost all the buildings on the map are present in this time, as is the south tower.

Richard, Vasili, Nuray, Altan, Rojan and Tara (am I missing anyone? Besides Marcel, whose where- and whenabouts have yet to be discovered) are presently in the New Hall on the second floor.

If you have other questions, ask away!
