New Ravenloft Audio Books [was: James Lowder Audio Books]

Post by steveflam »

Soth Audio Books links

I thought I'd share this great news with you all. It is on another site but heck, I had to tell you all!

Reason: Now that we know it's more than the Lowder books, I wanted to make sure everyone knew about them...

As this is Ravenloft-related, I'm moving it to the General Forum.

With that said, WOOHOO!!! Can't wait for these....

Do we know who will read these?

I remember Roddy McDowell doing I, Strahd. It was pretty awesome. I hope these are as good.

Lowder just posted the Audible.com link on his Facebook feed:
http://www.audible.com/series/?asin=B00AEURZWM

They're read by Danny Campbell, whose voice I'm not familiar with.

Anyway... PSYCHED!!

Wow.... it's actually bigger than that... a bunch of D&D books are now on audible, including the Soth books AND 6 more Ravenloft books:

Death of a Darklord
I, Strahd
I, Strahd: The War Against Azalin
Heaven's Bones
Dance of the Dead
The Enemy Within

Oddly, I, Strahd is NOT the Roddy McDowell version. It's been re-recorded by someone named Paul Boehmer.

There are a few special offers for new members.

If you go through audible.com, you can sign up for a subsctiption. $7.95 for the first 3 months, $14.95/month thereafter. 1 book credit per month. 30% off additional books.

If you go through amazon.com (who owns audible) you can get a free month trial with a bonus credit, so 2 free books, and then the same $14.95/month with 1 book/month.

EDIT: not sure if any of this applies to you over in Greece, alhoon.

Just finished listening to KotBR last week. Overall, very good. It was great to refresh my memory of this fun book. Only a few quibbles:

1) Seems to have missed a step of editting/proofreading (proof-listening?). There were several places I thought were mistakes/slips of the tongue. ("at" instead of "an", for example). One outright error: ("Lord Sath sot and waited...") and a few words that were pronounced differently at different times, even though it was the same reader. (The most glaring: "Soth's" was pronounced sometimes as a one-syllable "Soths" and sometimes as a two-syllable "Soth-is".) The total effect was to make the production seem thrown together, though it was otherwise professional-sounding. Makes me wonder if these audible.com voice actors work on a piecework basis, cranking out audio files in their basements and just sending them in for a cursory check before upload.

2) The always jarring audiobook issue: names pronounced completely differently than you always imagined. :) I've always said "VAL-uh-kai". Here it's "vuh-LOCK-ee". Also, since they often call her "Kit", I thought Kitiara would be "KIT-ee-ahr-uh". Here it's "KEE-tee-ahr-uh."

3) The actor used a completely different voice for Azrael than I'd expected. Normally this wouldn't bother me, but it seemed to turn him into more of a jester-like prankster-gnome, and not a grizzled thuggish dwarf. Harder to take him seriously.

Beyond that... a great way to spend several hours in the car. Onward to SotDR...
