I'm also interested (In BlueBomber's, Band's and Cure's timelines)! May you send them to me via E-Mail? Besides the Gazetteers, the only book I have in RL 3e is Champions of Darkness, so I could make a small timeline based on it, but I guess it is one of the most hated RL books ever, and few of you would be remotely interested... Am I right?

I would like the additional detail. And perhaps you might unearth a temporal incontinuity which would oblige a reinterpretation of the Sheriff Von Zarovich. (It would be nice if he happened to be dated from a little after Strahd went into hibernation and to the night or two after the count returned from hibernation, the implication being that he was in fact a fraud profitting off of the Lord's absence.) In any case, the better we know the facts, the better we can then twist them to our liking.

Well, ah, see here is the thing. I was about to post my timeline here when I noticed that it was missing Gaz 3. I don't know why that Gaz was missing from the timeline. I suspect it was Lord Godefroy who erazed it from my computer so no word about him gets out. :wifred:

Or it could have been d’Honaire "convincing" me that I had already include Gaz 3 in the timeline months ago when I really had not. Or I could have just been distracted by something bright and shiny.

In any case, give me a couple of days to correct the problem. I have already been through the Dementlieu chapter and added it to the timeline. I should be able to finish the rest of it in a day or two. So, I went it is done I will post it here in this thread. After I have posted, if anyone wants an email copy of it, just send me a PM with your email address.
Only two things scare me and one is former back-up dancers for Christina Aguilera.

Hmmm. Hate to say it after all your hard work, Band2, but this seems to be a mix of legitimate and false history. Most of it is valid, but other sections are either pseudo-history of the sort the Dark Powers place in the minds of new domains' residents (like Dementlieu pre-707 BC), or historical inaccuracies (Dorian was a Barovian boyar who betrayed his nation to side with the Tergs, not the invaders' leader) and/or political propaganda (like Sergei's or Morholt ApBlanc's cause of death) introduced by fallible mortals.

Maybe it'd be wisest to create two versions of the timeline: one for what residents of Ravenloft believe history to be, and another for what really went on.

Well, I have to say that Band warned about that. Still, I like it very much. Thanks, Band!
Dorian was a Barovian boyar who betrayed his nation to side with the Tergs, not the invaders' leader.
I remember I fell in the same mistake some time ago. If I recall right, reading through te History chapter in the Barovia section of GazI gives the impression that Dorian was the leader of the Tergs... Have to check it, though.

The "History of the World" article I made for the Player's Guide to Ravenloft is very close to what the "first version" would be: A collection of False History that the residents of RL believe true. I wrote it as if written by a lamordian historian who wanted to put things together, and managed to create a hideous amalgam that I guess could pass for the history of a "real" world. It is not really a timeline, but kind of a story, though.

Gaz I does give that impression ... but then, it also gives the distinct impression that Strahd I was a candidate for sainthood. My guess is that Dorian's name has been associated with the Tergs in popular memory for so long that the historical records S consulted now tag him as being one of them.

Whoever the real Tergish leader was, he was presumably either already dead (beaten by Strahd's forces), or else too far away to get swept up by the Mists, when Barovia's darklord fell from grace. Hence, his name has been forgotten, while Dorian -- who had ruled the lands that became Ravenloft's Barovia before Strahd's army showed up; that's another reason the locals wouldn't care to remember his treachery, not wanting to admit they'd once been vassals of a turncoat -- is recalled as a Terg and not a Borjian.

Sounds like a fun read! :D Still, it'd be nice to have a what-people-believe timeline we could consult, distinct from the what-really-happened one, IMO. Maybe a double-column format with the "historical record" events on one side, and the covert (ugly) realities behind them, on the other? IIRC, the old Hollow World boxed set used a similar layout, to track the outer and inner histories of Mystara.

I guess I made a timeline when I was on the project... I'll search for it and send it to you ASAP.

Edit: Well, I think it's kinda similar to Band's... I just added some parts of Mr. Mangrum's timeline that I assumed would be "public knowledge".

Edit 2: I still hope Van Richten's fans will forgive me for the treatment I gave to the good doctor in the article... I just put myself into character (A *Lamordian* scholar), and tried to think what would he think about the famous monster hunter...

The timeline was just what was in the Gaz. I made not attempt to explain or correct contridictions with other products.

I did not make any distinction between "false" history and "real" history, because what i wanted was a "Ravenloft" timeline not a timeline of all the prime plains that domains came from. I wanted something that would show if the PCs try to research history what they would find.

Which is perfectly okay and fair. It's a helpful timeline, Band2 -- sorry if I sounded overly picky, there  -- and we appreciate your compiling it.

I'm just saying that, if this thread really is a call for an "Update The Timeline" project, we ought to pull out all the stops and make the results as useful of a reference as possible. That would include drawing a clear distinction between true history, false history, and just plain wrong history.

It is, and I totally agree! Better yet, it can be further divided by domain, as Band did!

Maybe it could be laid out in a tabulated format, with columns for each event's date, location, status (real, false, secret, etc), and sourcebook. That way, the entries could be quickly re-sorted to group them in whichever manner the user finds convenient.

Page number also.

An excel file?

The (possible) problem is that the description can, in some cases, be very long, which may (perhaps) create formatting issues (excel formatting is not my strength).

Also, status might not always be nicely reducible to the suggested categories. Potentially an event could be undecidable as to whether it is or is not false history, or propaganda, and 'secret' in the land of the Mists is a very relative idea, i.e., secret from whom . . . .
