Agreed. At the time those books were coming out, TSR/WoTC had no qualms about namedropping connections between the settings. If it was meant to match, it would've match exactly. Well, I think Ravenloft will likely be #4 or 5 on WotC's big list of campaign settings they want to put out, if they follow their one setting a year plan.
