Re: Help with Altered Magic: Conjuration (Summoning)
No, summon monster doesn't, but magic circle against law/chaos (and outside RL, good/evil) and dimensional anchor do. Summoning a fiend and calling, trapping and binding one into service are two different techniques. Solid reasoning. I can't call a fiend out of the magic circle where you already ha...

Re: Help with Altered Magic: Conjuration (Summoning)
Except, of course, summon monster doesn't work like this anywhere else in the multiverse and Ravenloft summoners have a rather poor record when it comes to keeping their fiends in check ... Or in other terms, I am still trying to decide whether this spell has a bug or a feature in respect to individ...

Re: Overland travel in the Near Ethereal
From the Manual of Planes: "The Material Plane itself is visible from the Ethereal, but appears muted and indistinct, its colour blurring and edges fuzzy. Ethereal denizens watch the Material as though viewing it through distorted and frosted glass... No matter where you are on the Ethereal, y...

Re: Help with Altered Magic: Conjuration (Summoning)
What happen's if I use the spell in Richemulot or Souragne to summon the devil that the Fraternity has bound in its basement and that is currently serving as a portal between the two domains? Does the spell fail because of the binding magic? Or does the spell succeed and the binging magic is broken?...

Re: Overland travel in the Near Ethereal
It's been a while since I've read the Manual of the Planes, but doesn't the near ethereal have ethereal echoes of the terrain? This seems to be how the Shadow Plane is described. They both are in different ways. The Shadow is a macabre distorted reflection of the Material, full of suppressed secret...

Re: Overland travel in the Near Ethereal
Opps, apparently the Dark Powers didn't get the memo that the Deep Ethereal and the Near Ethereal were canceled in 3.0-3.5: http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Ethereal_plane Or alternatively, since Ravenloft 3.0 was cleaved off from, and wasn't supposed to reference, the rests of the TSR/Wizards'...

Long-distance communications: Church of the Lawgiver
The head of the Church of the Lawgiver might be imagined to run a pretty tight ship, wanting regular detailed reports and issuing detailed instructions. And indeed the bureaucracy of this institution is likely to be ponderous. So how does the church maintain communications between its fanes, many of...

Overland travel in the Near Ethereal
I am pondering the relative utility of overland travel in the Near Ethereal between domains in Ravenloft. Evidently no shortcuts are available through the Deep Ethereal. The most obvious benefits would seem to be the ability to evade observation by the vast majority of material creatures and to igno...

Re: Help with Altered Magic: Conjuration (Summoning)
So the summoned animals are not magic animals, just animals, and accordingly are subject to magic that targets the latter but not the former? Equally, summon animals are not subject to a dismissal spell and the like? Finally, when used to summon animals, the spell does not gain an alignment descript...

Re: Help with Altered Magic: Conjuration (Summoning)
From the FSC: "Summoned creatures in Ravenloft do not use the outsider template." (p. 92)
Should this in fact read the "extraplanar template"?
Either way, what are implications?

Help with Altered Magic: Conjuration (Summoning)
I am looking over the Altered Magic rules for Conjuration and in particular Conjuration (Summoning). First, not only called creatures, but equally summoned creatures are granted a Will save to escape the caster's control and do as they wish? Second, is the save made immediately or on their turn in t...

Re: Ebb remembers being an outlander?
Mordenhiem apparently is beginning to make some headway into the matter of genetic selection, but I have sever doubts that it a subject of active thought among shadow dragons or Azalin. I won't take Azalin's self-cloning efforts to be necessarily counter-evidence either. Their bases seems to more ma...

Re: 15th Anniversary of the Book of Souls Netbook!
Speaking of which: Mangrum, would you retain Knowledge (the planes) being cross class for all or go with the core rules? Core rules. Really not a fan of any of the new rules added in the 3.5 Ravenloft Player's Handbook. Would you, however, dump the 3.5 core rule that made spellcasting ability a pre...
