Re: Steampunk in Ravenloft

Also, if you want some extra inspiration material, here's my Paridon: The Dark Metropolis campaign, which came out heavily clockpunk.

Re: Paint it Black

Oh, heck yeah. A Warm Place is an excellent Ravenloft song. But hey, I use NIN in other places, too. I used "Gave Up", remix from the Fixed album, in a fight with a clockwork vampire whose screams caused Confusion. I finished that particular session with "Self Destruction, pt. 2"...

Re: 1st Level and 2nd Edition Ravenloft

My standard Ravenloft campaign starts the PCs in Ghastria. For the first adventure, they venture out into the forest to track down a group of children that got lost playing when a storm arrived. The children took up shelter in an abandoned mill, which was being used as a dumping ground by a ghoul in...

Re: Paint it Black

The Infernal Violins take is nice. It's like a Mordentish take on Karel Gott's Balok version. Remind me of another music trick I did in a campaign. I used Khatchaturian's Masquerade Waltz as the theme for Borca: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNSDJoSNH-g Soon, the PCs ran out to the countryside to f...

Here are a few things I use for inspiration regarding Marikith: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcKpx2DxGwY http://www.flickr.com/photos/11152879@N08/3024503721/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/2517598480/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/romanywg/4084961045/ Also, the song "Embodying" ...

Here's an example (from Paridon): "Ah, Gis, please! Do come in, sit and enjoy!" Gis enters the great hall at D'Marosso Manor, set with a large table. The table is covered with food and drink, sights and smells from faraway lands. At the head of the table sits a very large man. His doublet ...

It hasn't been really specified, and I rather like it that way.

Since part of their horror is that they are unknown, anything to keep them unknowable helps to keep them frightening.

I know we're talking specifics now, but I figured I'd share my thoughts on how to run Ravenloft that I posted on another board. I'm a big Ravenloft fan, but I've definitely tweaked it my own way over time. I'll plug my Paridon campaign here as an example. Here's my take on Ravenloft: 1. It's all abo...

I let myself in the front door. I started with the original black box, one of the first to buy it. I had always had some fascination with the concept of undead, and how it crops up in mythologies throughout history, but really I sat down with Ravenloft, learned its nooks and crannies, and used it to...

I like the Beguiler idea for Anneliese! Go forth and design! If you're needing some good guys, a possible NPC could be Nahasia D'Polarno, a PC from the Juste Desserts link above. She was a ward in the D'Polarno residence. I hadn't worked out all the details of her mysterious past, but I had already ...

One character in the Unauthorized Biography I never did fully flesh out, but kept as an extra villain for Ghastria, was Anneliese. Anneliese was the sorceress who originally cursed D'Polarno, and I brought her back as a ghost wandering the island. She can travel anywhere in Ghastria, including D'Pol...

We'll have to first think about what the theme of Nova Vaasa is, first. Its mutable history has kept it bare of a consistent theme. Hey, maybe that's the idea. The darklord's curse is having no past--an inability to remember what has come before, but understanding that the past did lead to the prese...
