Alot of Italy reminds me of game worlds. Especially the small towns.

If you want a good feeling of a palace, without the crowds, o to a city called Viterbo, and go to the Pope's Palace. A great place to dream up games.

An idea:

In the Time of Unparallelled Darkness, Ravenloft begins invading other planes and settings, taking them over and turning them into domains. Doing so begins to expand the power of the DPs to all new levels...

A note: Earl is not an anglo-saxon title, but a norse one, imported by the Vikings and Dane, coming from Jarl.

But yeah, Count works.

I like I, Strahd an awful lot; and tales of Ravenloft is also good, since it is fast and flavorful.

FWIW, if you have an NPC who NEEDS to die by poison, or the players are very good about setting it up, I say let it happen. Easier than overhauling the rules.

A good fact about the Ravenloft novels is that TSR often went out of house to good horror writers to pen the books, making their quality better than most of their other fare.

I think that they are still basically the same.

For example, roadwork spontanesouly begins, stopping all travel along roads out of the domain. Or Police patrol the borders as AMW puts out a notice on you.

Modern twist, same effect.
