Mounted knights aren't possible because there are no lances in the game. The other possibilities are fine, as long as you like the other class. If you want to play a dwarven axe fighter that attacks with two hand-axes then you're going to have to play an agile, fast-moving woodland hunter. If you w...

Combat: I don't understand why it's more fluid than it was in 3E (If someone could explain that to me, I'd be most grateful), but I welcome the change. The sorting of the maneuvers in alphabetical order seems to be a big plus. For our group, combat has been much smoother for a variety of reasons. F...

Still with a couple of feats they can use rituals and many of their powers seem like spells to me. Not to mention the teleport abilities of the eladrin or the invisibility of the gnomes. I agree though that many problematic spells have been dealt with in 4E. On the other hand a 30th level power dea...

So far, I'm actually liking the 4th Edition rules for Ravenloft. I could see a switch quite easily. Mainly, because it seems to me, after a few play-throughs that the sudden jump in power has been toned way back. For example, the most powerful powers at 30th level do 7d of damage to something. So no...

I wouldn't want to see Fear, Horror, and Madness as new Defenses. Yuck. :P Talk about overly complicated. What I'd like to see instead is a new skill called Composure, which determines how well you resist Horror or Maddening things. I agree that Fear should be a combat or magical effect. I like the ...

I've been thinking of this lately. And come to the conclusion I would start again fresh with Ravenloft if I was given the choice. A complete and total restart. See, the old editions have one surviving use: fluff. The more the fluff is repeated, regurgitated or replaced the less useful the old books...

Cure makes a good point. Are wandering darklords anything more than a DM fan service equivalent of Alien vs. Predator that will go over the heads of PCs, and maybe throw some knowledgeable players for a loop? As an RL fanboy, it'd be fun to see in a novel, but how does it help gameplay? For me, it'...

This is Ravenloft's principle problem: people's perceptions. That it's only good for Weekends in Hell, that campaigns have to involve escape, that darklords have to be involved, that it's a land of pure evil, that it's a static land, that it's a place where DMs kill parties, etc. Really, there's no...

As to this mobile Darklord stuff, frankly I think it is laziness. Darklords DO interact. I think your post showed something. Sure, the Darklords have interacted to some extent. But for one, do they have actual relationships with each other? And by relationships, I don't mean that they are best of c...

The main problem I see with letting the lords leave their domains, even if circumstances motivate them to stay put, is that people already complain that the darklords control far too much of what goes on in the setting. Well, what you want, in my mind is the capacity for the Darklords to interact w...

Seriously though, the way people are going on in that thread, they may as well create a new setting since alot of what is Ravenloft seems to be removed in what they'd like to see. I think there are certain sacred cows in Ravenloft that you would want to keep. But a reboot would not be impossible. I...

What makes these folks think that a Darklord wouldn't happily trade their domain-given powers for the ability to leave the domain and go where they want? The smarter, more tortured ones, anyway. I think the point was that one of the coolest things about Ravenloft has been and always will be the Dar...
