Re: Ryan's Carrion Crown campaign journal

I found the time lines for the first two modules far too slow. My players figured out many of the clues really rapidly, and they basically short circulted a lot of the pre-planned sequence of events. For trial of the beast there were some clues that were effectively impossible for my players to get ...

Re: Cultural Levels & technology in Ravenloft

Initially I felt like Doctor Evil's 700 year difference from domain to domain was a little off, but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made in the context of the setting. With Padiron and Sanguinia isolated as they are (in most campaigns, tho not mine) it really takes those two outliers...

Re: Cultural Levels & technology in Ravenloft

Quite frankly, most of my players have never questioned the differing technology levels. But I portray the western part of the core as having good communications and Dementieu and lamordia leading in terms of technology because they have universities or are major cultural centers, and lack of techno...

Re: Army Regiments

I think CL 7 domains shouldn't have regiments, and thinking of it, not even CL 8 domains unless they have a large population and border CL 9 domains. The first 'professional army' in England was in 1640 - the New Model army, which was 22,000 or so strong. A regiment of infantry was 1,200 men, and c...

Re: Army Regiments

In my current (mistfinder) campaign I have a player whose character is an intelligence officer in the mordent militia. The militia is funded by a tithe from the aristocracy and town councils, and as such the militia is often influenced by local politics. The militia is equipped with muskets and rapi...

Re: 4E Ravenloft--Back into the Crypt for Now

Well, at least we'll have Carrion Crown and Rule of Fear. http://paizo.com/image/content/PathfinderCampaignSetting/PZO9231-Cover.jpg It looks like Carrion Crown is doing well (at least in terms of sales on Amazon) and the flavor so unashamedly Ravenloft in flavor (with a not-so subtle adventure Pat...

Re: Dread Elemental Domains

I like the cloud forest concept, Dr Evil. In which QtR may we find Mist Elves? QtR 13, p. 130 I modified their stats for use in pathfinder - here's my home brew version: Racial Traits: Mist-elves posses all of the racial traits described in the Pathfinder Handbook with the following exceptions: • +...

Re: Dread Elemental Domains

Re: communities For the dread realm of grave, have a look at the old "Monster club" movie for a great depiction of what could be a ghoul community. Also read the "graveyard book" by Neil Gaiman. For Pyre - it would be difficult to sustain a city perhaps within a dread plane. Pari...

Re: Dread Elemental Domains

Re: the time period. Others were talking about Darklords from Gothic Earth so I just stood up and created one. I will, however, make one thing perfectly clear: There are NO functioning steam engines in the domain of pyre. At least not for long. Steam Engines require WATER to work and water is a rar...

Re: Dread Elemental Domains

I think we need to avoid the whole '19th Century mad scientist' thing. We want him to be quite distinct from Dr Mordenheim. That's why I suggest not using Lamorida or Gothic Earth. Perhaps go more mediaeval then - have a classic physician who is obsessed by the 4 humors (and leeches), perhaps appea...

Re: Dread Elemental Domains

But, first things first, I think we should focus on the Darklords of Grave and Blood first. The Darklord for Grave is pretty much done, he just needs a name and a domain to have originally come from. Well, and stats, I am only familiar with 3.X/Pathfinder though . As a corpse snatcher/grave robber,...

Re: Dread Elemental Domains

What about an influential and prestigious physician from the Gothic earth setting... a very academic physician who has a hypothesis about blood letting as the cure for an epidemic disease (cholera?) and pushes his hypothesis to his medical students, dispite their protestations that it doesn't work. ...

Re: Dread Elemental Domains

I always thought of the elemental plane of blood to be a huge sea, but I like the idea of a swamp, with rust red water, leeches, and vast swarms of mosquitos. Many carnivorous plants perhaps? I like the idea of red fogs. The forest fire idea for the elemental plane of pyre also makes a lot of sense....

Re: Getting more use out of Odaire

I've been tempted to expand the domain by adding the child snatcher from Chitty-chitty-bang-bang (who gave me nightmares as a kid). Perhaps take that idea further, with a lord in the castle who hates children but loves elaborate mechanical, but deadly toys (including life sized toy soldiers, clown p...
