In 2e, it more tough when you were poisoned. Spider bite? Save or die. Given that save-or-die effects are generally major campaign-killers, I can't say I mourn the loss. Sure, my character Gotten did get killed by a bad save against a spider :) But in 3e, save or paralysis would be much better. A p...

I also see the 3e system as not blunt enough about poisons. When in 2e you get into battle with a giant spider, you were worrying...

It's in Van Richten's Arsenal. Pages 59 and 60, to be precise. Oddly enough, it doesn't induce unconciousness, it deals nonlethal damage, so oil of taggit is still your best bet.

Wikipedia is your friend. Short version, they're the exemplars of True Neutral in the Planescape setting. As for why they would have the power to enter and leave Ravenloft at will, I have no idea.

There's a fairly comprehensive guide at the end of the Monster Manual. While it's technically a guide to creating new monsters, it works for NPCs as well.

Ghosts in the Machines

This story is also features in an anthology entitled "Shadows Over Baker Stree; more tales of terror" Yeah, most, if not all, of the stories in Fragile Things have been published elsewhere. Also, in the spirit of the season, Gaiman's written a Halloween story for the New York Times, title...

I actually thought of Robespierre when I wrote my last post. But, like with Louis, he's pretty much a very obvious choice, which can be a two-edged sword (on one hand, it's neat for PCs to face down major historical characters. On the other, it's often exactly what they expect). So, for a completely...

Fragile Things

So I just finished Neil Gaiman's newest short story collection Fragile Things , and it's quite wonderful. Being a short story collection (with a few small poems) it is, of course, varied, but on the whole I really enjoyed it. Some highlights are A Study in Emerald (Sherlock holmes meets the Mythos, ...

Chilling Tales has a small adventure featuring Muhar and the nearby tomb of a mummy, now occupied by a Sobek-worshiping cult (I think that's how it was, anyway. It's been a while since I read it). It could easily be expanded a bit, and the tomb itself is a nice small dungeon.

First off, magnificent game-starter. Wonderfully cinematic. As for the cause, the first thing that comes to mind is The Call of Cthulhu (the short story, not the game, although you could probably get a lot of inspiration from the game as well - Gothic Earth is essentially Cthulhu by Gaslight with le...

Speaking of Van Richten's Arsenal, I believe the Amulet of the Beast kept a shapechanger from changing, but the lycanthrope was in no way prevented from removing the amulet, so it only works with willing subjects.

I imagine that Lucy's transformation is more a matter of long-term constitution loss and some dominate from Dracula's side. Being vampirised (vampirified? Vampired?) is more or less instantaneous (you die and you wake up, only with new eating habits).

Incidentally, the poll is worded quite awkwardly. "Do you want more gazetteers" would probably be better, as people usually answer "yes" when they're positive, while in your poll they have to answer "no." Confusion ensues.
