Re: Doppelganger vs. Lycanthropy
I like the psychological affliction angle. Taking it a step further ... what becomes an afflicted doppelganger when the change is upon him? Do they ... change into a blood-crazed animal? A blood-crazed hybrid animal? Yawn. That's what happens when humanoids are afflicted with lycanthropy. If everyth...

Re: Ravenloft - Strahd's Possession
I fully admit to not being a tech guy ...
But after some google-fu, I managed to find a thread on another site that seemed helpful.
The very first post mentioned a few settings to tweak with regard to the video & audio output of the game.
Hope that helps.

There's quite a few decisions in that film that would have led to Powers checks.

Re: Cursebreakers [Campaign Design]
Thank you very much for the suggestions, gang. The game, however, fizzled and died before it got too far underway. It's been my experience that PbP games (whether I am helming them or acting solely as player) tend to wither on the vine more often than they don't. Eventually, I'd like to be in someth...

Re: Anyone ever heard of an undead fiend?
It might be a neat angle to explore if you ruled that a fiend who found their way to undeath sort of 'removed' themselves from a more normal fiendish ecology. So like, normally, a fiend not-on-its-home-plane dies ... and it gets to reform (and, most likely, seek sweet sweet revenge). But maybe, upon...

Cursebreakers [Campaign Design]
Hey gang, I am starting a new D&D 5E campaign on another play-by-post site. The setting will not be Ravenloft per se, as it will be set in the Forgotten Realms, but it will definitely be have some Ravenloft-y vibes and lean heavily into some dark fantasy tropes. I was hoping to use this thread t...

Re: Playing Ravenloft with Complete Newbies
Calls to mind a saying from my youth.
There are old pilots adventurers, and there are bold pilots adventurers. But there are no old, bold pilots adventurers.
A healthy dose of 'be careful out there' is always a good thing.

Re: Playing Ravenloft with Complete Newbies
I'm really digging this thread. It's one of the things I have struggled with in the past, dealing with player-knowledge vs character-knowledge when helming Ravenloft games I mean. It's such a lore-centric setting that so many fans know a lot about. Sometimes it gets easy to lose the mystery of havin...

Re: Help me with ideas - Train adventure
I like the idea of the train compass being stolen because of Vistani but maybe if the compass is made from Vistani secrets ... I'm really digging the Vistani angle. Riffing on the 'made from Vistani secrets' angle ... perhaps even made from VIstani? Similar to how folks can use a needle and place i...

Re: Help me with ideas - Train adventure
My first thought was to use a ghost in some fashion. A ghost conductor perhaps? Another thought that popped into my head was to include a train-hopping scene where the PCs fight their way in, on, and above different cars [like the scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ... where young Indy tu...

Re: Children of the Night: Giants
Giants — if only indirectly, and even then, as a 'ghost' — figured in the plot of the Castle of Otranto . One of the very first gothic tales. Sins of the father being visited upon the son, a crumbling castle with secret passageways, a family with dark secrets, a forbidden love, portraits that move, ...

Re: The OGL, Ravenloft and You
One thing that comes to mind after reading this thread is the question: How much of this do we know to be true and how much of this is someone's opinion and they think it will be the case? Basically, is the new OGL up for review somewhere? I'll give some of those sources a read and/or listen. I'm su...

Loving these updates! More please.
The most recent season of American Horror Stories (the anthology one, not the whole-season-is-one-story one) has a living doll / life size doll house episode. It might be worth mining it to see if any cool visuals could find their way into Myra's lair.
