I have to be honest... the obvious answer didn't even occur to me.

Re: Gothic Earth and Ravenloft

Okay, I think I sorta worked it out... but time stuff is confusing. According to Mangrum's timeline, Odiare appeared in Ravenloft in 738BC pulled from c.16th century Gothic Italy. Now, in the original Black Box released in 1990, the current game year is 735BC. So 738BC = 1993, the year The Created w...

Gothic Earth and Ravenloft

Random thought: What is the correlation (if any) between the calendars of Gothic Earth and Ravenloft? Obviously, this really only applies to Odiare, but the only references to dates I can find (Magrum's timeline and Ryan Naylor's Pathfinder in the Mists) seems to put Ravenloft in Gothic Earth's past...

Re: Questions. Thoughts. Musings.

Yea, I'm thinking that some kind of ritual is needed - perhaps involving the Ba'al Verzi dagger, and probably with Sergei and Tatyana's latest incarnation in attendance. Basically, I'm thinking that one has to sever Strahd's ties to the land in order to defeat him once and for all (essentially, he c...

Re: Questions. Thoughts. Musings.

Azalin thought it was Strahd linking himself to Barovia via his "I am the Ancient, I am the land" speech with the Ba'al Verzi dagger that did it (see I, Strahd I and II for details) - he was the first to tie himself so tightly to his realm that the Mists could snatch up him *and* the land...

Re: Silly RL names

I just realized I never posted my sanitized list of Ravenloft names in this thread. So here goes: Lamordia: Nortenmark (pseudo-Germanic "northern reach", hinting at a Falkovnian-invasion history) Mordent: Cosabel (pseudo-French "côte sable" - black coasts) Dementlieu: Maresotes ...

Re: Silly RL names

Resurrecting - because I'm bored and because I stumbled upon these this afternoon while I was trying to rework Ivan Dilisnya. The word borca is Turkish for 'debt'. Dilisnya appears to stem from the Hungarian word dilis meaning 'crazy' (can't find any reference to the -nya suffix though; the closest ...

Re: Questions. Thoughts. Musings.

Ok I may be the one that has read it the most recently in the past so lets see.... Him and strahd needed food that night so they were hunting.... obviously probably tipped off by the Gypsies that there was 'new blood' in town. (my assumption not in book) The people were from Faerun. Jander didn't w...

Questions. Thoughts. Musings.

So I've been sitting here for the last hour or so randomly reading through the RL timeline, scribbling bits and pieces and generally avoiding doing anything in the way of real work and a couple of thoughts have popped into my head. There's no real rhyme or reason to these, so I'm just going to put d...

Just curious... Has the second part of Gothic Earth Eternal been released yet? If so, I've missed it somewhere in my travels.

Re: Top 5 worthless domains

I think the confusion here isn't over the classic horror tropes, but over the word "Gothic". In literature, Horace Walpole's "The Castle of Otranto" is generally considered the first Gothic romance. The fact that it was subtitled "A Gothic Story" certainly helps in that...

Re: Crowd-sourcing a Cluster spin-off: Mourning Pyre

Okay, curse idea. I like the idea that it can take over a body of one of the dead in the land at any time. Perhaps limited to corporeal dead. But the Creeping Death is still technically alive. It's a living spell. In a land of the dead that can only act through the dead. As it has grown in size and...
