Re: Ravenloft 5E: Want versus Need

For all new editions, I think we should encourage a conversion program for converting the main stuff to 5e. Get the 2e/3e era fluff, and here's the 5e crunch. Jester did a good job with 4e, we should convert and host the same for 5e. I've actually been thinking about doing this for awhile; I figure...

Re: The Kargatane: Where are they now?

Glad to hear you're still doing well Mangrum! And for what it's worth, I still have a pang of sadness when I think of the Mordent we could have gotten, had you gotten your shot at writing it for the Gazetteer.

Re: The Kargatane: Where are they now?

So many necromancers? Why, there are Strahd, Azalin, Meredoth, Morgoroth, Daglan and Misroi. Missed someone? More than that though, Ryan made efforts to make each one of them mechanically different. For example, Strahd wasn't just a 16th level Necromancer and Tsien Chiang was a 20th, as they were i...

Re: The Kargatane: Where are they now?

Thanks for the response Ryan. I'm glad to hear that life is working out for you, and I hope it continues to do so. Really enjoyed your work on converting the Darklords over to PF. Often as much the reasoning you had behind making certain decisions with the characters (I always remember you talking a...

The Kargatane: Where are they now?

Hey everyone, I was thinking last night, it's been almost twenty years since the Kargatane started writing for Ravenloft, and with no disrespect to the ones who came before or after, I honestly believe that their work in bringing Ravenloft into 3E was some of the best writing that's ever been done f...

Re: Lamordia

Yes, please, dismiss the slave caste which is demonstrably self-aware and literally only has one life to live as not worth it. I'm sure the Dark Powers agree that a person should be hung out to dry because of a circumstance of birth and are totally not on the lookout for "acceptable sacrifices...

Re: Lamordia

So the way they describe this "soulless" aspect in the module is thus. Souls aren't able to flee Barovia when they die. They get trapped by the Mists. (Incidentally, this is something I've believed for years; it explains why there are so many Geists in Ravenloft, as well as characters in 3...

Re: Lamordia

I like the idea of the Smothering of Reason, but I agree with others that the implementation means that it almost never comes into play. If I were to run a 5E game in Lamordia, I might consider the following change. As a caveat, I have not play tested this at all, it's just something that came to mi...

Curse of Strahd Advice from Ravenloft Fans

Hey all, I've been away from Ravenloft for a long while, but I'm going to be coming back soon as my 5E group wants to play Curse of Strahd. Have any of you run it? Do you have suggestions? What worked well, what didn't? I've read most of the module, and I know there are definitely things that are......

Well, I think there's lots of question there, but I don't really have anything more to add. If what I've said hasn't convinced you, then there's really nothing else I can say that would, so we'll just have to disagree.

Re: 5e announced!

Not if you stand behind and to the left of the guy. True. At that point though, it's the same as the Ranger shooting his bow. Damage might fluctuate a few points due to different weapons and such, but otherwise, pretty much the same. Balance issues aside, would that feat be fun in the game? I see n...

Re: 5e announced!

Well, respectfully, I disagree. It's not the same as +1 to damage. That's a bonus you can count on. If I have a +1 to damage, it means whatever I roll, I'm getting +1 to that. Increasing the damage dice means on average I'll get +1, but that's not the same. Just ask some of my players, with their lu...

Re: 5e announced!

I dunno...Spear Mastery doesn't look instantly OP to me. If anything it looks like they achieved what they wanted to try and do; take a simple weapon and make it as effective as a martial weapon for players who want to specialize around it. I don't see a +1 to damage, only +1 to hit. (EDIT: I see, y...

Re: 5e announced!

Funny, I've never thought of Red Hand of Doom as a classic. It came out later in 3E time, if I recall. Don't get me wrong; I love the module. For me, classics are stuff like you mentioned, Demonweb Pits, Against the Giants, etc. I would also figure we might see 5E versions of Tomb of Horrors, White ...
