Shadows of Esteren - A New RPG

http://www.esteren.org/ You can find the link to the English language site from that page, and it is currently in Kickstarter for its second book. I have taken a look at its introductory material, available for free online. It lists Ravenloft as one of its main inspirations, and I'm seeing the influ...

Re: The Whistling Fiend (in 4th Edition)

From my experience DMing in 4th Edition, it looks good for a Solo. However, do you want the Whistling Fiend as a solo, or as a boss monster? These are two different roles, entirely. Stun-locks and other forms of Action Denial is abundant in 4E, and it is one of the strongest forms of Solo control in...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

Not entirely a bad idea.

Though I, personally, place it in a more nebulous realm of collective subconscious. I think having it on the Moon, however, works VERY well.

And keeps its sense of otherworldly horror, lurking in the twisting cthonic tunnels below, staring balefully down upon the world.

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

On the Moon, ewancummins, we have advanced beyond rules and manners. Though, I'm not sure what that has to do with things. Personally, I'm keeping the Ildi'thaan, and the Dark Delvers, because one of the first Ravenloft products I ever purchased was the old Forbidden Lore boxed set, and I've been wa...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

I remember cranium rats. Ahh, Planescape. You were fun. And the Nightmare Lands are alive and well. They're similar to Bleutspur (which is also alive and well). They are both realms of nightmares and fevered imaginings, where terrible, inhuman things lurk, always nascent abudding with the waking wor...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

It's similar to the Veil, but more sinister. Whereas the Veil is a product of the collective subconscious creating a consensus reality, and most Sleepers edit the details to go about their lives easier, the Shadow (in the sense that I am using it) is more sinister. Werewolf victims come across as be...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

I am planning on keeping to the concept of the Shadow, as is presented in the d20 Modern sourcebooks. In short, the supernatural is kept hidden from the eyes of skeptics by some kind of mental shrouding effect. And you're right on the money, Alhoon. The more educated and enlightened an individual is...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

Because there has been a decline in magic, to the point where it is nearly non-existent in most of the world. What magic is seen is either kept extremely hidden, or is quickly "debunked". And while it was demonstrably real prior to the ToUD, the same has not been true since. Part of the cu...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

Correct. Circumnavigation is impossible, though some still attempt it. And yes, you can wander into the Mists and wind up elsewhere. Or, at least, that is what your mind tells you. For all you know, you could have ceased to exist during your time in the Mist, and are merely filling in the blanks, be...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

I could. But actually like the idea of a scientist, completely rational and believing in using obervation to extrapolate and interpolate a rational universe that comes together in its corners, and doors staying sensibly shut, calmly asserting that there is simply... nothing beyond the Misty Border. ...

And I go through the maps and my posts, and realize that my directional dyslexia has struck again.

I have corrected my previous posts to be what they should be. Bloody dyslexia.

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

Why can the darklords move about, anyway? What was your thinking for making that change? Just curious. In short? The Time of Unparalleled Darkness came when the Dark Powers simply... stepped away. Suddenly, the Darklords no longer had the curses leveled upon them by the Land, and had their freedom!...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

Demihumans in Tepest is still better than being demihuman under Falkovnian rule. Or, at least, that's what the ones who fled there believed. At first. The Inquisition (which was Belenus-based, if I remember correctly?) became /very/ powerful during the Time of Unparelleled Darkness, and probably bur...

Re: Ravenloft by Gaslight

Re: Vorostokov Who is to say they haven't? It's not in an enternal winter, so much anymore. But until contact was made with the Core, they had no reason to believe anything was out there. Even in the current map, they are surrounded on three sides by the Misty Border, and the fourth by the Sea of So...
