An undead familiar is a creature that was once a familiar in the employ of an arcane spellcaster who betrayed or outright slayed the familiar.
Undead Familiar seek only to find the master that betrayed them and meet their gaze in order to slay them (which affects only the ex-master.) If they are killed by another who is not their master, they will reform some time later and resume their hunt. Should the master they hunt escape the demiplane, they will turn their attention to the nearest local spellcaster to attack -- who has nothing to fear from the undead creature and may simply end its existence. Should the guilty spellcaster return to Ravenloft, however, the Undead Familiar will reform and continue its quest to kill its old master.
