There are two incarnations of the Society known as The Circle, or the Order of the The Circle. The original version was an order of paladins, sworn to protect The Great Kingdom. Kateri Shadowborn and Elena Faith-hold both belonged to this incarnation, and Alexi Shadowborn was barred from entry due to a bad omen. When Alexi confronted Ebonbane and captured its evil essence in himself, his half-brother and squire, Ferran Shadowborn returned to The Great Kingdom and became the leader of the Order. Ferran and the rest of his Circle were slain by Morgoroth, and the original version of the Order was destroyed.

Alexi Shadowborn formed a new Circle, now known as the Knights of the Shadows. These Knights were not all paladins, and adopted as their symbol an eclipsed sun, based on the sun symbol of the original Circle. They wear distinctive gold and black cloaks, so as to hide from their enemies, but be seen by those who need them. To join, one must have suffered a great loss, and swear to protect a group of helpless people of the Knight's choosing. The Knights gather for a mandatory yearly pilgrimage in Nidala.

More recent leaders of The Circle include Dame Helna Vladinova and the current leader, Gondegal.

To prevent Ebonbane from escaping, Alexi now resides in suspended animation in a crystal coffin created by Morgoroth, within Shadowborn Manor. The yearly pilgrimage of the knights includes a mission into Shadowborn Manor to maintain the magical seals on this coffin, using mystic keys provided by Morgoroth.^[1]
