On Gothic Earth, when an evil being of suffice power and malice claims an area as its home, the creature's corrupt nature warps the area around it to reflect the creature's own nature, often giving the lairs very unique (and terrifying) properties. However, all share certain traits in common: increased chances of failing powers checks, turning checks, and fear/horror/madness checks, and so on.[1]
In effect, a lair of evil is very similar to a Sinkhole of Evil. It has a rank from 1-5 and is tainted with dark emotions. Ethereal resonance also appears in a lair of evil. However, there are a few significant differences. The sinkhole of evil is like a living memory of dark deeds performed and the suffering they caused. On the other hand, the lair of evil is an active sanctuary for the monster that infests it, for it is infused with some of the Red Death's power. A lair of evil can manifest a sort of malign intelligence against trespassers and event leave malignant stains that last long after the creatures' departure. Consequently, only those creatures that have been changed by the Red Death will manifest such lairs.[2]
