Category:Carbon
Carbon is a chemical element. Its identification as such is a Steam Age (cultural level 10) scientific event, albeit one early in that period. That is to say carbon as such is unknown in the Land of Mists. It has not yet been discovered by either alchemists or chemists. Both pure and impure forms of carbon are, however, well known, although their common basis is not. Diamond and graphite are pure forms of carbon. The discovery of each is a Bronze Age (cultural level 2) event. Charcoal, soot, coal, and biomass are impure forms of carbon. The use of charcoal and soot in art dates to its very advent and with it the beginning of Stone Age (cultural level 1) cultural events. The discovery and use of coal is a Brooze Age (cultural level 2) event. Carbon in impure forms was first used in the Iron Age to create steel, which is an alloy of iron and carbon.
