The mechanical golem is a type of metal golem that is made of gears and other mechanical parts. Its invention is attributed to Easan the Mad.
The mechanical golem is a magical animated construct and as such lacks the dread golem template. It is a mindless automaton that obeys in the most straightforward way possible the orders of its maker, drawing no conclusions and taking no initiative. The creature will not resort spontaneously to special actions such as tripping or disarming, but it may either be given a specific instruction to make one such attack or may be directed as necessary by a maker who is immediatley at hand. When issuing instructions to the animate thing, its maker is wise to error on the side of simplicity. The creature is mostly lent a humanoid form and is a mechancial horror, being a whirling, whining, crackling assemblage of more or less fine gears, rods, and other mostly metalic parts in their hundreds if not thousands. A metallic skin may conceal the interworkings however. When inactive a mechanical golem offers no hint of being something other than a statue welded together in some mad fusion of art and mechanics. Its invention is attributed to Easan the Mad. A mechanical golem can be found in advanced lands (CL 8+) or elsewhere in the service of advanced, but not necessarily well-adjusted, minds. Its employment is often as the guardian of advanced research facility.
Construction
The successful maker of a mechanical golem not be a spellcaster but a spellcaster must ultimately be called upon. The maker pours 125,000 gp (or its equivalent) into bringing his or her idea to "life". Nearly half of this sum, 60,000 gp, is invested in establishing a highly advanced workshop (CL 8+) which admits of reuse at no cost. Of the remainder, 30,000 gp are spent fashioning the thing's body, which takes 10 months and a successful Craft (clockmaking) check (DC 30). The ultimate animation of the thing requires 1,400 XP from the maker and a spellcaster to cast the following spells: animate objects, chain lightning, fabricate, grease, and either miracle or wish.
